To the degree that these conditions promoting stress can
be minimized, grasses will generally flourish and weed
populations will decrease and remain at low levels with
little or no use of herbicides.

The fact that current weed populations in most of the
cities’ atheletic tields are relatively iow depite heavy
use of the fields and the moratorium on herbicides indi-
cates that, by and large, city park maintenance staff
are using good turf management practices. The following
recommendations are designed in part to augment prac-
tices currently being followed by city staff as well as
to suggest some new procedures designed to minimize weed

growth in turf.
