Businesses fear cost of coming smoke ban BAR AND restaurant owners say they’re going (o be the hardest hit by new regulations aimed at protecting workers from second-hand smoke ia the workplace. The new rules from the Workers Compensation Board give most employers until April 15 of next year to make their workplaces smoke-free. Restaurants, bars, nursing homes and prisons get an ex- tension until Jan. 1, 2000. The rules give employers three main options: @& Ban smoking throughout the workplace. W@ Set up a designated smoking area — either in a safe outdoor Jocation or in 4 separate, ventilated room that non- smokers aren’t required to enter. i Or use other ‘‘equaily effective means’? to control ex- posure of workers to second-hand smoke. That last option could sce restaurants and bars forced to invest in expensive ventilation systems to suck ajl smoke out of areas where patrons are allowed to light up. “We're sure employers will come up with all sorts of creative ways to protect workers,’’ says the WCB’s Scott McCloy. “They could have their workers wear respirators, for example.”’ The bottom line, says McCloy, is that workers have a right to be protected from second-hand smoke, which kills more than 500 non-smokers each year in B.C. “We're not banning smoking,’’ he says. ‘‘We’re saying the employer has a responsibility to protect workers from environmental tobacco smoke exposure.’” Coast Inn of the West general manager Doug Barrett says the probable result is that hotel, restaurant and bar owners will have to spend whatever amount of moncy is needed to allow patrons to continuc 23 smoke. “There's going to be an obligation to fulfill the needs of has all you need to eGINGERBREADs PLIVHOUS G a a More Than ‘e = Just Duckie Come in and pick up your ‘FREE Toys of Distinction - Skeena Mall + 1-800-661-2990 © 635-5236 TWILIGHT SPAS & PUMP SUPPLY complete your Hot Tub or Billiards Room.
