Drummer Instructor

We have been less fortunate in this respect and, to acquire a competent
teacher, have had to import a paid instructor from Vancouver, ( Mr. .Jack Gallagher,
formerly of the Triumph St. Band). -

Until we are able to train a competent teacher of our own, we will rely on
his services.

Drum Major

7 Once we have sufficient competent young drummers available, we are assured
of a well experienced Drum Major ( Mr. Robert Straghan of Port Coquitlam). However,
Mr. Straghan does not have time to teach in the primary stages.

Progress

The early months of 1975 were occuped in instruction and practise so that
the newly organized adult Pipe Band could play together. They progressed well and it
has now been two months since we began working with and training the Junior Section.

The original group of 13 applicants has since settled down to approximately
8 interested students who show real promise. ( 5 of these are drummers and 3 pipers).
With the summer approaching, we are anxious to keep up their instruction and their

interest. Later, in the Fall Season we will add to this group from other applicants.

Following that, as they reach proficiency, we will add them as a second
section to the adult band.

The ultimate hope and intention is for a Junior Commmnity Pipe Band built
-around a nucleus of adult pipers ari drummers.

Standard of Proficiency

; It should be emphasized that we are aiming for a well conducted Pipe band
‘of a high standard of performance that will be both a credit to themselves as well as
. our Community. It is not our intention to parade them in public before. they have

sufficient skill. They will be brought to the public eye as they gain proficiency.

The costs of establishing a Pipe Band are high and, since the Legion has
numerous commitments, money is a problem.

Financing up til now has been done by the Legion, the adult members of the
band and to some extent by the childrens parents.

We are, therefore, requestin, the consideration of Council for a Grant of
money toward the instruction of the Pipe Band Junior Members ( between the ages
‘of 10 and 16 years).
