Bd - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 8, 2003 Rehearsals signal new season for Terrace Community Band THE TERRACE Commun- ity Band is marking the beginning of ils 21st sea- son with a new conductor and a new practice set- ting. Thirty musicians turned up for the band’s first prac- tice of the season, Sepl. 30, at Caledonia Second- ary School. “Historically. we've had as many as 40 people. but in the past, we’ve had 20 people,” says band publi- city director Carol Lomas. Although that first prac- tice was al Cal, the band is shifting to the new Skeena Junior Secondary School. “We're looking forward to Skeena because it's new,” said Lomas. - Skeena is also the home school of Susan Brouwer who is the band’s new dir- ector: She's been de- scribed as one of the finest _band conductors in Cana- da. Susan has directed choral, jazz and concert band ensembles throughout British Columbia, A graduate of the Uni- versity of Victoria's school of music, she currently dir- ects the concerl and jazz band program at Skeena ' Junior Secondary, and has taken her ensembles to compete and win gold at MusicFest, Canada’s na- tional festivat. Susan credits her love of music to the enthusiasm of her music teachers, and to her parents, who would make every concert a fa- mily event. When not conducting or leaching or playing her bass trombone, Susan loves to spend time with her husband Rick and their young daughter, Renya.
