From the lett are navigator Stu Ames, pilot Cliff Sharples, group crew and Search groups always honing airborne skills JAMES GILHAM says it’s just like being a firefighter. “You practice, train and prac- tice again but hope you never get called,’” said Gilham of the local Civil Air Search and Rescue As- sociation (CASARA) group. -. Some of that practice and train- ing took place two weckends ago when two aircraft and a group of volunteers spent a Saturday per- fecting their craft. Working out of the Hawkair Aviation Services building at the airport, the CASARA volunteers tested their Search'ability. by look- ing for signs of an overdue air- craft painted white over black with silver trim. The aircraft in the scenario carried a pilot and a passenger and was on a photo taking trip to the lava beds in the Nass Valley. A map on the wall of the Haw- kair building outlined the air- craft’s flight route and the search zone. The search area was divided into rectangular pieces, each one bearing an identification number to make for a co-ordinated and Driver a 3 fine — ONE OF TWO pickup drivers who raced down Lakelse Ave. causing a serious crash in 1992 has been convicted of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, The Terrace youth — 17 years old at the time of the accident — cannot be named, according to the Young Offenders Act, He was acquitted on a more serious charge of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. Judge Ed de Walle sentenced the youth May 4 to 18 months on probation, fined him $1,000, or- dered him lo perform 100 hours of community work, and suspended his driver’s licence for two years, Crown. prosecutors Had called for a prison term, The second driver involved. — 18-year-old Dwayne Etzerza, of Telegraph Creek —— still awaits trial, 2 Both vehicles reached speeds of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour along Lakelse Ave. prior to the collision, court was told, According to evidence given in court, {he youth passed Etzerza’s truck on the right hand side and then tried to.cul him off, The left rear of the 1%-year- old’s vehicle hit the right front of Etzerza’s pickup, court was tald. That caused the youth’s truck to lose controt-and hit an oncoming car. The three occupants of the car — 24-year-old Janice Henry, 67- year-old’ Vera Henry, and 14- year-ald Sandra Henry — were seriously Injured in the collision. methodical effort. Searchmaster Mark Dohler called the missing aircraft's route “the track,’ adding that the search pattern first fans out five miles on either side and then 10 miles. He noted that searching in mountainous terrain is difficult because of peaks and valleys and varying flying conditions. — It can be particularly difficult in ideal search heights in the 1,000 feet range, added Gilham. “Flying that kind-of search pat- tem is really trying flying. Our . pilols have to have at least 250 hous of fying and they ate certified in mountain flying,”’ he said, As difficult as the flying can be, spotting is also an exacting task. An aircraft stays in a search pat- tern for 20 minutes to half an hour at a time and then pulls up so the spotters have a chance to relax. **There’s no such thing as a bad call. When in doubt, call the air- craft around,’’ said Gilham. Spotting is also made difficult because shadows created by the sun’s position can change the way things look on the ground. And, noted Gilham, a downed aircraft often doesn’t look the way people think it should. A typical CASARA search air- craft carries a pilot, navigator and two spotters. Smuin and Bemie Moore. The navigator’s job is to guide the aircraft to the search location, keep track of the time and per- form other tasks so the pilot can concentrate on the job at hand. Gilham said the CASARA role in any search is first determined by the situation involved. CASARA aircraft and voluntecrs can operate indepen- dently of military search and res- cue. But when the military search: and rescue is called in, CASARA _ comes under its jurisdiction. * Githam’ said‘ it's important to note that not all searches are for overdue or missing aircraft. CO-OP\ eS ee a eS oS safety officer Kent Keenleyside and spotters Karen McKenzie ‘‘When somebody's missing on the ground and a large area needs to be covered, we can be called in,”’ he said. On those types of searches, CASARA becomes part of the Provincial Emergency Program. Local CASARA volunteers have counterparts in Smithers (where the zone air commander lives) and on the Queen Charlotle Islands. There are five local aircraft reg- istered under the CASARA ef- fort. , A separale organization called ak “the Skeena Air Rescue Society“) has been formed to raise monsy for equipment.
