Kalum Wood Products — Continued from page At was in- operation for just over a year. . ’ On March 20 the Minister of Forests announced that Kalum Wood Products had been awarded a Small Business Enterprise Pro- gram bid proposal sale of 94,000 cubic metres of timber in the Kleanza Main area. It was the first Section 16.1 sale in the area, & type of sale requiring the success- ful bidder to use the timber in a value-added processing plant. The bid proposal was called in Septem- ber 1990, and Kalum was the only company that responded to it. Norm Parry, manager of the Small Business Enterprise Program in the Kalum Forest District, said Kalum’s bid was a joint one with Marine Way sawmills in the lower mainland. The licence is about 60 percent pulpwood, he said, and Belt POLES SINCE 1908 Kalum should be able to upgrade the logs by extracting cants. Those, he said, would be shipped to Marine Way for finishing into a variety of products. The agreement has not been signed yet, he noted. The fact that the mill now has a tenure hasn’t changed the orginal concept of the operation, Parry Said, Under the performance clause involved in the licence, the mill has to be kept running while the area is being logged. ‘Under the Forest Act if the com- pany closes down the mill or becomes insolvent the proposal has to be put out to public bid again, or cancelled, Parry said he expects the licence to be signed sometime within the next month, NOTICE OF 5 YEAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN The Bel! The government has nof authorized the early re—setting of clocks on Saturday night, before the official time change actually takes effect; therefore, sleeping residents across the province must set their alarms and wake up for the legislated event. The concept of Daylight Saving Time was developed — yes, you guessed it — to save daylight. Evidently, Pacific Standard Time wastes valuable daylight. Without this government regulation, we, the extravagant masses, might casually toss away our allotted daylight by indulging in an early evening’s retirement, or some other unimaginable practice in the dark privacy of our homes, Through Daylight Saving Time, we are rescued from that horrible fate. But Daylight Saving Time is not observed in all localities. Residents of Regina, Saskatchewan loosely squander their daylight hours, leaving their responsible Saska- toonian neighbours to conserve this limited resource. The people in Dawson City, Yukon, spoiled by their abundance of daylight, fla- grantly leave their clocks set to Pacific Standard Time, frittering. away the unregulated hours. that we so carefully hoard. This continues until October 27, when dutiful British Columbians will set their alarms for 2 a.m. and return to Pacific Standard Time. From that point on, we will face a dark winter of limited daylight. So then, could B.C. residents draw on that bank of daylight they so law- fully saved through the summer? Nope. We're shipping it to Ottawa, where they’re always in the dark. VERY SECLUDED PLUSES Lakeside - West side Lakelse Lake, 1 1/2 storey cottage w/spectacular views.
