22 Terrace Review — Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1986 Teachers begin an -instruction-only campaign TERRACE Local teachers’ ‘‘instruction- only campaign’ began on Monday, Jan, 13. According to the Ter- race and _ District Teachers Association (TDTA) action plan, during the next two weeks teachers will limit all their school activites to 40 hours per week. TDTA Working and Learning Conditions Chairman Ray Walker said the B.C, School Act requires teachers to work only 25 hours. per week in instructional or classroom time. Over and above that period are such items as _ preparation, marking, and supervision of clubs, teams and dances. ‘Walker said a survey indicates it is not unusual to find teachers spending as much time with students outside of the classroom as inside. Because of such out- side activities, he added, some teachers actually work a 60- to 70-hour work week. For the next two weeks such outside activities are scheduled to be limited by teachers to 15 hours per week. That amount is set to decrease in three addi- - tional steps. On Mon- day, Jan. 27, a 35-hour work week is scheduled and then on Monday, Feb. 10, a 30-hour week is to begin. Two weeks later, on Monday, Feb. 24, the full ‘‘instruction- only campaign’’ is scheduled to be in place. A scheduled ‘media blitz’? that was to have started Jan. 6 has not yet materialized in local papers, but Walker said the TDTA has been “media blitzing’ its own membership to explain the action plan. | School District 88 ad- ministrator Harold Cox said negotiations have resumed between the school board and the TDTA on their personal practices contract. The board had previ- ously issued a press release stating such negotiations had broken off. According to a TDTA bulletin dated Dec. 9, 1985, ‘‘the B.C. Teachers Federation (BCTF) backs the ‘in- struction only campaign’.’ The OTA. presented a 28-page submission to the BCTF and the pro- vincal executive endors- ed ‘‘in general terms, the pursuit of grievances relating to learning con- ditions violation, the ac- tion plan ratified by the local membership; and the principle of financial support for the local in its upcoming struggle.’’ The bulletin stated the BCTF approved a specif- ic 10-point support pro- gram including initial funding support and local visitations by the BCTF president or vice- president. Court report On Monday, Jan. 6 Marcel Bouzane was found guilty of commit- ting five offences under the Unemployment In- surance act. Bouzane was fined $100 on each count for a total of $500. On Monday, Jan. 6 Kenneth Pritchard was given a jail sentence after being found guilty of driving while his ability to operate a motor vehi- cle was impaired. Prit- chard was also given a two month jail sentence for assaulting a peace of- ficer.
