the long list of. arson
statistics are the number of
successfill convictions
arising from the fires.

Last year charges were
* laid in less than 20 per cent of
the 1,662 deliberately-set
fires in British Columbia and

for arson, but one of the most
common is retaliation by
employees, said James
Kirschbaum, executive vice-
president for the Fireman's
Fund Insurance Co. of
Canada. .

Poor labor relations can be
costly and even disastrous,
he said, citing the example af
a large U.S. supermarket
chain that was having Jabor
problems. .

“They had one store after
another torched and one dis-
tribution centre after
another until they were
almost forced out. of
business,” he said,

“Ultimately they were
forced out of business. At the
time when all this started.
they were the number one
food merchandiser . . .and
they slipped rather quickly
into second position.” ~
