: \ Ist_Iissue Oct. 1964 THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER 11 be “REPORT OF THE OFFICERS’ REPORT COMMITTEE” Local Union officers because of varying conditions. Some Interior delegates questioned the agreeing to a three-year contract as being against Regional Policy and direction. Again it was noted that the membership accept- ed them. In discussion, criticism was expressed that certain Re- gional Executive Board mem- bers did not participate in the formation of demands at the Interior Wage and Contract Conference in Kelowna. POLITICAL ACTION The committee had extend- ed discussion on the section dealing with political action and were in full agreement with our policy of supporting the. NDP party as the one political party from which Labour can hope to gain sup- port for its political program. It was recognized that since the NDP cannot expect finan- cial support from big business it makes it mandatory that the trade union members must support them and con- tinue to affiliate both individ- ually and by Local Unions. The committeemembers expressed concern over the lack of support between elec- tions, also the indifference of Union members affiliated to other CLC Unions to the problems of the NDP. It is felt that both Education and Action Committees should be formed by Local Unions. Some reports of lack of co- ordination and recognition by the Party itself were given but generally accepted that we have a responsibility to develop support amongst the membership. Some members reported that there was a great dispar- ity in the reception of the party in Interior areas, most- ly governed by the brightness of the Socred picture in the particular locality. In other areas where this influence is strong the matter of Local Union affiliation is creating quite a severe problem under the existing legislation. LADIES’ AUXILIARY We note that there are sev- eral Local Unions with active Ladies’ Auxiliaries. We would recommend them for their as- sistance and services to the membership and point out the advisability of all Local Unions in organizing these very helpful assets in serving: our members. A.
