| French ——- forms foundation | for smelter re- -build ALCAN’ S. KITIMAT Works will use’ the newest most modern AP35+ prebake tech- -Nology for its $2 billion smelter moderniza- -Uion.: It was originally developed by Pechiney .France and has been owned by Alcan since 2004. High energy efficiency, computer con- ‘trol, low emissions, efficient dry scrubbing (cleaning) systems, and high levels of mate- » tial recovery are features of this technology. ' The potline modernization will consist of ~ up to 360 pots housed in six (6) buildings, producing up to 400, 000 tonnes of alumi- num per year. The pots would: operate at approximately 390,000 amperes. They would, be ser viced . by overhead cranes. “By way of comparison the existing Kiti- ‘ mat smelter has a total of 900 smaller pots in fifteen buildings with a total rated capacity __-, of about'275,000 tonnes per year, Raw materials that would.be used i in the - . bing process will be returned to the rodue- _ process include: Alumina from’ Australia: . Liquid pitch from Korea; and Calcined Coke "from Edmonton, Alberta. Alumina is stored in silos until it is re- quired. Before being used in the process, the alumina is fed through devices known as dry scrubbers where it functions as a scrubbing i medium to clean emissions. _ The petroleum coke (carbon) and liquid pitch will be mixed together to form green anodes. Emissions from this process will be. collected and dry scrubbed (cleaned) using coke as a scrubbing medium. The coke would then be reused in the pro- .. cess. The green anodes will be baked using natural gas fires. All emissions will be col- lected, and any tars present, incinerated in the natural gas fires, then dry scribbed using wumina. The.alumina will then be reused j in the process. The bakes anodes will be used to replace ‘those that have been consumed in the pot. Partly consumed anodes (called butts) would be recycled back into the process as carbon. “In a prebake pot, alumina additions and: anode effect treatments will take place with- in the totally enclosed pot. Removable doors will provide access for - anode replacement. Emissions generated by - - the process will be contained within the ‘en- closed pot and drawn off by an emission col lection system: Treatment. will be carried, out in dy. scrubbers. Emissions captured by the scrub- — tion process for re-use.” Aluminum smelting is isadry process with: water being used only for cooling purposes. Sanitary sewage discharge will be pumped. “into the District of Kitimat sewage treatment . facility while the surface runoff will be col- lected in retention ponds and then released. Overall, AP technology makes Alcan a powerhouse with unrivalled expertise in- operating smelters with sustainable, reliable and proven per ton cost.
