In the competition for club awards, made particularly keen in the last days of the drive, New Westminster club took the Lower Mainland, closely followed by runners-up Burnaby and Richmond clubs. Nanaimo club took the top honors for the provincial shield with the Kamloops and Victoria clubs given honorary mention. Above all, the work in the drive, carried out against a setting of high unemploy- ment, with most people hard-pressed to make donations, emphasized the vital need for the paper. At the same time, there seems to be a turning point, he said, citing the Gainers strike in Alberta, and the Building Trades as examples of the desire of working peo- ple to “take a stand.” That’s also expressed in the mood for change, he said, adding that there will be opportunities this year to make that change in the political arena, with the Vancouver civic elections and in the expected provincial elections. “We've been part of change in this pro- vince for 51 years,” he told the crowd. “And now your support has ensured that will continue for another year.” OKANAGAN Penticton 750 616 Vernon 1,500 1,881 N.
