E. Sommers, former: minister of lands and forests. But despite the fact that Sommers is still in hiding and his slander action against his accuser, David Sturdy, has been dismissed without trial, Premier W. A. C. Bennett and Attorney-General Robert Bon- ner refuse to act on the Som- mers scandal. In a trans-Atlantic telephone call from England, Bonner told the Vancouver Sun on Wed- nesday that he will not order a royal commission inquiry, nor will he bare the secret RCMP report.on the case. In his defense in the slander suit Sturdy said $193,000 was involved and that a group of companies and individuals had conspired to pay more than $40,000 to Sommers. Mr. Jus- tice J. V. Clyne ordered dis- missal of the case when Som- mers failed to show up in court and his lawyer admitted he did not know where he was hiding. The Labor-Progressive party -this week issued a statement which said: “Many months ago the LPP demanded an inquiry into the administration of the forestry department while Sommers was at its head. This demand was turned down by the Ben- nett government. Instead of taking measures to bring the matter before the public the Social Credit government did everything possible to cover up for Sommers. Particular guilt rests on the shoulders of Attorney-General Robert Bon- ner. “The turn of events in this case, which have shocked pub- lic opinion, makes it impera- tive that a detailed account of Sommers’ actions and the charges against him be reveal- ed to the public through a proper inquiry.” DAVID STURDY “R. E. SOMMERS Anti-Semitic speech applauded by Socreds A vicious anti-Semitic speech by Dawson Creek account ant Percy Young won warm applause from delegates attending the annual convention of the B.C. Social Credit league here last weekend. Although press reports of the speech have aroused wide- spread revulsion and caustic newspaper comment Premier W. A. C. Bennett has failed to repudiate Young or the ideas he propounded. Speaking on a_ resolution calling for the Social Credit League to institute an educa- tional study program, Young was. applauded when he launched into a bitter attack on Zionism” which he claim- ed “has completely destroyed Christianity . .. and will de- stroy Social Credit too, unless th people have proper educa- tion.” Young blamed “Zionism” for all the world’s evils, and declared that the “Zionists” controlled communism, nazi- ism, socialism, the trade unions, banks, the press and radio, “everything in fact ex- cept Social Credit.” Young, a Social Credit “the- oretician,” charged that “Zion- ism has a very underground way of getting destruction. You have,to know your enemy to fight it.” According to Young, Zion- ists ‘call. themselves Jews, but they are really Russians from Outer Mongolia who went to Israel in 952 B.C.” Social Credit leaders have often stated publicly that their movement is not anti-Semitic. But the delegates at the So- cred parley listened to Young’s speech, then warmly applaud- ed it. Complete convention reports C. FEDERATION OF LABOR TURN TO PAGES 2, 3, 6, 11, 12
