cae 7 3 % THE CORPORATION OF THE d CLTY OF PORT COQUITLAM JUL 9 - 1990 TO: BR. Kirk DATE: July 5, 1990 City Administrator FROM: Environmental Protection Committee SUBJECT: Household Hazardous Waste Collection Weekend (Environmental Protection Committee Meeting July 4, 1990) RECOMMENDATION : That Council approve, in principle, participation in the GVRD's proposed region-wide hovsehold hazardous. waste collection program, and that a formal committment be considered at such time as more details of the program and 7 costs to the City are known. BACKCROUND AND COMMENTS: The attached correspondence from the GVRD outlines their proposal to organize a series of weekend collections of household hazardous wastes in cooperation with their member municipalities and the Ministry of Environment. It is understood that the Province would pay for the transportation and disposal of _ the wastes. collected and for a portion of the advertising and promotional | eosts. Although these costs are not known for certain at present, it is anticipated that the City's share would be in the order of $6,000. The Committee feels that this is a reasonable price to pay to provide am environmentally sound disposal service to the residents who wish to get rid of these hazardous materials. The funding for this could be available from the 1990 Environmental Protection budget: by delaying the hiring of a recycling coordinator. - D.G. Riecken, P. Eng.
