Overview PoCo House survived December and has become progressively healthier. ; Through January and February we suffered growing pains as our drop-in attendance reached record highs, and our three new staff members were confronted with a lot of testing behaviour by the clients. However, this was handled well, adjustments were made and we progressed. The role of PoCo House in the community as a drug abuse prevention centre is exemplified by the numbers of teenagers using the drop~in centre nightly. Under the supervision and direction of our staff they are finding alternatives to drug use. Through the last three months, with full staff, we have spent more time in formal and informal counselling, and in planned activities. as well, our staff has been able to spend more time in formal training for their jobs. As a result we are experiencing an improved attitudinal and behavioural change in our clients. This, coupled with stricter enforcement of our House rules has resulted in a marked decrease in the number of instances of alcohol abuse. We have also seen a great decrease in the use of "chemicals" by these teenagers. The number of incidents of destructive behaviour have also decreased. On the whole, the clients have responded well to our expanded program and to our increased personal contact. With the help and support of the Advisory Committee and their fresh ideas we hope to continue to improve our program. We look forward to more outside activities; like camping, tennis, etc., as the weather improves. Certainly, an important factor will be our effort to employ about 8 teenagers in outside werk for the summer with funding from the O.F.Y. All ‘of our efforts are toward creating alternatives to adolescent drug abuse. Major inroads on drug abuse cannot be made by stressing the undesirability “of drugs. It can only be done by offering more desirable alternative involvements ~ activities, life styles and satisfactions which are more rewarding than drug experiences and incompatible with dependence on chemicals. This is our role.
