From front Loggers here not atfected Some people might think ail of Princess Royal Island and indeed virtually all of the B.C. coast has just been made a park, but that’s far from true. In fact, Interfor loggers based in Terrace with Bear Creek Contracting will continue to log on Princess Royal and other areas, Slaco says for the short- term they won't be affec- ted by the deal. “The land-use plan an- nounced today still has harvesting areas on Prin- cess Royal Island,” ke said. “In particular the area we operate on right now is still an operating area and we expect to continue operating there.” Some valleys have been deferred from logging where the company would like t0 begin road-building soon, he noted, While the new style of forestry the companies are pledging to practice may involve things like selec- tive logging, it doesn’t ne- _cessarily mean an end to - clearcutting. “It could still involve clearcutting,” Slaco said, adding the economics of forestry is a factor to be considered in decision making. ' “Qur goal here is to still end up with a harvesting business on the north and central coasts,” Slaco said, The eco-system based Jogging idea will be first put in place in the central coast. But it’s likely the same model will be applied in parts of the Kalum and North Coast forest dis- tricts, Clogg said, explain- ing that’s why the two companies are now off the green hit list. “Basically the solution in the Kalum will be con- sistent with the central coast,” he said. “You and your friends” “SoMa pouerssafoid RC), } We wish to crow your RU’ attention to the folowing in our XY” cuntent"2001 ANNUAL CATALOGUE’, on Tsimshian language class By JENNIFER LANG THE SCHOOL board has backed down from a plan to consult with two parent groups before giving its bless- ing to a Tsimshian language pro- gram. Native representatives expressed shock at an administrative report re- commending the board’s approval in principle for a Smalaax language program hinge on the support of a Parents advisory committee and a local Punjabi group. “I question that proviso and I want clarification,” -Kitsumkalum chief councillor Diane Collins told the board April 4, referring to assis- tant superintendent Sharon Beedle’s report. “Why would you put that in there at all?” Collins, a member of the native education committee, said the re- quirement is unacceptable because the language program will be paid for solely through the district’s targe- ted First Nations finds, “Why were only the PAC and Punjabi groups singled out for this?" asked Kermode Friendship Society executive director Rick Miller. “Why would anyone here think that we in the Tsimshian nation would have to get support from these or any other groups?” School trustee Marj Brown said the district wanted to avoid opposi- ‘tion to the Tsimshian language pro- pram. Citing last year’s uproar in Hazel- ton's schools over compulsory Gitx- ‘san cultural awareness studies in the Hazeltons - when the district learned “there were kids who were . simply not attending” because par- ents were opposed — Brawn said it’s better to deal with parents’ misgiv- ings up front, “I took the long-range point of view,” Brown said. “Smalaax will be in schools, now, is it going to be with the support of parents? Or is it going to be lukewarm tolerance?” The board unanimously approved the program in principle last week, but Brown’s bid to follow Beedle’s recommendation to consult with the PAC and Punjabi groups failed to gain the support of her fellow board members. Collins later praised Brown’s good intentions, but indicated the School district may have inadvert- ently tried to overstep ils boundaries. Collins said three years of plan- ning have already taken place. “] don’t want to waste precious time.” She said the program has the sup- port of the communities of Kitselas and Kitsumkalum, and other First Nations groups in the area, including Prince Rupert, where.the curriculum and materials were developed. The Smalaax 5 program at Clar- ence Michiel, offered through Grades 5 to 12, is slated to start in the fall. The program has been accepted by the education ministry as fulfil- ling the requirements for second lan- Buage elementary curriculum. In addition to giving the green light to Smalaax 5, the district also gave approval in principle to Haisla language programs at Mount Eliza- beth Senior Secondary School in Ki- timat. @ Terrace Stondard, Wednesday, April 11, 200] Board won’t give parents say * UE GANOLS SHED “Don't forget the Garden Shed” | 5033 Graham Avenue, Terrace Ph: 638-7697 « Fax: 638-7671 9 “AIS Us!
