Northmen miss out on top tournament try OUR TERRACE Northmen will miss out on a trip to paradise this Fall, as they have been forced 1o drop their planned tour lo the World Invitational Rugby Tournament in Hawaii. __ Rob Sarich, president of the Terrace Northmen Rugby Football Club offi- cially canceled the tour last week. “It simply came down to numbers,” he said. “‘At the annual meeting of the ..club_it appeared. we hada strong con- tingent of players, but as individual cir- cumstances have. changed over the year, the number of players kept dwin- dling untit we did not have the 19-21 players needed to play a tournament of this high calibre.”’ The World Invitational is a prestigious event held annually in Waikiki, featuring teams from around the world — with an emphasis on the Pacific Rim basin. The Northmen first played in the tournament in 1988, and have made subsequent trips to the Jand of Aloha both in 1990 and 1993. The team is still contemplating a trip to Prince George early in the Fall to play the Gnats and Barbarians to round out the 1996 season. In April they will be travelling to Victoria to represent the North Coast Rugby Union at the Provincial Championships. This will be the second consecutive year the Northmen have represented this region, by virtue of their first-place finish over rivals, Smithers Camels and Prince Rupert Seamen. Ansems finds gold at lower mainland event ‘LOCAL RUNNER Ed Ansems finished in fine form at the Delta Half Marathon two weeks ago, Ansems was first in his age group, crossing the line at one hour, 19 minutes and 52 seconds. SPECIAL Olympics have had a great year in Terrace, and volunteers are’ already working 10 make next season even better. A total of 34 athletes from Terrace were regis- tered last season for bowling and swimming, along with a number of competitors from Hazelton and Smithers. In bowling, a new scor- ing system was used which allowed volunteers to spend more time cheer- ing for the athletes. The teams also did some travelling, including a trip to the Northen B.C. Winter Games in Prince George. This season, Terrace will be hosting the North- er B.C. Winter Games, _and - Special Olympics will. be helping to host Bowling, Swimming and Snowshoeing. Qualifying rounds for the B.C. Spe- cial Olympic Summer Games in Coquitlam will also be held, Athletes have been pre- paring for this big compe- tilion for several seasons and. volunteers — are making plans for funding ~ this important event, The Special Olympics would like to thank all the volunteers, coaches and the community for sup- porting them in the sea- son, and they look for- ward to secing everyone in the Fall.
