AT. THE MARKET: | LYNNE CHRISTIANSEN LAST YEAR was Peter Vogelaar’s first season as a vendor at the Skeena Valley Farmers Market. Although be was hesilant about going to the market, it proved a terrific venue for his handcrafted wooden toys, stools and wagons. After a very busy season, Peter is enthusiastic about being back this year, Peter’s love for wood work may have been inheriled from his carpenter father, He says as a child he was inter- ested in his father’s wood work but knew better than to ever touch his car- penter tools. When Peter and his wife Kathy moved to Terrace in 1989, Peter de- cided to retum to his childhood inter- est in carpentry, In 1994 he started his own company — Timber Toys. He makes everything from small wooden toys like yowes and: wooden buttons on @ string, to bird houses, feeders, rocking horses, personalized foot stools, teeter totter and smal] wagons. Customized furniture and cabinets are always in demand. Peter spends a lot of time designing and experiment- ing to come up with mew ideas. A wooden platter in the shape of a fish, with a carved pewter head at one PETER VOGELAAR has found the farmers market to be a great place to get exposure for his toy and custom carving business. Last year was his first time at the market, and he's naw become a regular. end and a fanned tail at the other, caught my eye. Peter’s wood work sells through outlets on Vancouver Island on the lower mainland and in Edmonton. Peter uses a lot of pine. It's locally available and reasonably priced. Birch and oak are casier ta work with ac- cording to Peter, but they are more ex- pensive and he prefers the warm friendly look of the pine. Peter feels that good quality work and a reasonable price is the key to a successful business, He also empha- sizes that you have to stand behind your product. Peter says that the farmers market gives him good exposure for his woodwork and he enjoys talking with customers.
