i ’ Pape B4 — Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 26, 1990 Smaller size is big draw the attractive physical, setting, - ' Evening classes at Nor- thwest Community College are now in full swing. Conti- muing the series which began fast week with anthropology instructor Shannon Mark, three more instructors are Profiled below. New to the college this year is Sid Nair who is teaching Chemistry 101 (general) and 121 (advanced) courses this fall before adding Math 190, part of the Simon Fraser University teacher training program, next semester, Born and raised in Singapore, Nair’s post-secondary studies ‘were pursued in Ontario culminating in a masters in chemical engineering at Queen's University, From there it was back to Singapore to work in research and development with Nestles and then on to Australia for 18 ‘months. His globetrotting brought him back to Canada two months ago, Asked why he chose NWCC, Nair recalls he was an Alberta qe '* Tirso Morales undergraduate at a small university and likes the advan- tages offered by that type of in- Stitution. ‘‘There’s a closer rela- tionship between the instructor and the student,’’ he explains. Its location was also attrac- live, he adds, citing the scenery and, in particular, the surroun- ding mountains. His sentiments are echoed by another newcomer to the nor- thwest, Steve Francom, who says the closer contact with ONE OF THE talented dancers appearing when the Alberta Ballet takes to the R.E.M. Lee Theatre stage next week will be Barbara Moore, 4 + Sid Nair students makes for more effec- ‘tive teaching. He has moved here after three years teaching in an Ontario college. “J enjoy travelling and living in new places,’’ he says. Although he hasn’t Teally been here long enough to get to know the place properly, Fran- com says his first impressions are of a small but friendly com- munity and a beautiful, if isolated, setting. Apart from NWCC’s size and Ballet comes to Terrace next Monday when the 18 member Alberta Ballet company per- forms at the R.E.M. Lee Theatre. Under the artistic direction of Ali Pourfarrokh, the Alberta Ballet pursues an innovative and theatrical approach, As a choreographer Pourfarrokh prefers the contemporary idiom ranging from neo-classical to modern and jazz. His stagings of classical works include most of those from the standard classic ballet repertoire. Having its roots in the forma- tion in 1954 of a small troupe of amateur dancers known as Dance Interlude, the’ name Alberta Ballet was adopted in 1966. Since then the company has Ballet to perform _ grown in both size and statiiré. In 1988 the company gave-its - premier performance of The Snow Maiden at the Winter Olympics Arts Festival, That was also the year Pourfarrokh became artistic director. The Terrace performance ‘is part of a national tour taking in communities from Ottawa to Victoria. It takes place Mon- day, Oct. 1 at the R.E.M. Lee Theatre beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for students/seniors and are available from Erwin’s Jewelers and Kermodei Trading. an important factor in his deci- sion to come here was it offered the chance to teach literature again. He also instructs a technical writing course for students involved in other pro- grams such as Early Childhood Education. . This is Tirso Morales’ second year at NWCC but the change for hi isin the subject matter of his course. Last year he taught Spanish and admits he will miss that this time around, However, he looks forward to teaching hig new course — Introduction to Psychology. ; “It speaks -personally about you,” he says, adding the course also opens the door to further studies, Holder of a Science masters degree from the University of Wisconsin, Morales has worked as an advertising copy writer, in the media and with Northern Native Broadcasting. He says his main interest is “Shuman communication and inter- and multi-cultural com- munication,” ‘ _ ‘Terrace Stock Car Assoclation . | AWARDS BANQUET - & DANCE Saturday, September 29..
