Page AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 19, 1993 “BUSINESS REVIEW _ |: City boosts camping fee Wen ceed CLINT NADEAU swings axe to chop firewaod for campers at Ferry Island. He works for Canadian Wilderness Experience, the company hired by the city this year to run the campground. TERRACE — It will cost _ campers a dollar more to over- night at Ferry Island this year. City counell has approved new rates of $10 a night for siles with electrical service, $8 a night. for the rest. It’s the first increase in four years, city recreation director Steve Scott pointed out. During that time, he added, in- flation and the cost of operating Ferry Island have both risen more than 12 per cent. Council has also awarded the contract to operate the camp- ground this year to Canadian Wildemess Experience (CWE), owned by local resident Kress Nelson. One of four bidders for the con- tract, CWE will collect all camp- ing fees and pay a portion to the city on an agreed formula, Scotl said the city will get i0 per cent of the first $15,000 in gross revenue, 15 per cent on the next $15,000 and then one fifth of all revenue above the $30,000 level. ; Anticipating the campground would ¢atn approximately $30,000 this season, he said that would translate to almost $4,000 going into city coffers. Under the contract, CWE will be responsible for all casts asso- . Clated with operating the facility. Although the city retains re- sponsibility for capital improve- ments, Scott said none would be done this year. He explained his department’ 8 proposal money be spent on in- creasing the number of sites with electricity had been axed during Preparation of this year’s city budget. At present only six of Ferry Island’s 68 sites have power. Scott said four. bids were received on the campground con- tract. One of those was rejected because the bidder wanted to take all the revenue and be paid by the city to run it. The final selection was made based on CWE’s knowledge of the contract, experience and results of an interview, he ex- plained. Noting the original system saw the city pay a contractor ané col- lect all the revenues, Scott said, “We're really happy with the way it’s going now.” TERRACE — There are changes going on at the Coast Inn of the Wesl, Leaving as of May 26 is Debbie Melntyre after seven years, three and a half of which were spent as general manager.
