“They were invented
during the Depression
and have flourished ever
since.”

and more people can
play,” he said.

Vernou, one of the large
estates in the country.
There, a unique ad-
venture started twenty
years ago. Andree
Colson, having graduated
from the Paris Con-
servatory as a brilliant
violinist, had married a
gentleman farmer and
they had gone south to
live on his immense
family estate, 150 miles
south of Paris. The

After gathering string
players from all over the
world, eventually, an
instrumental ensemble
came into being. The
Ensemble started to give
concerts here and there
and after a few years,
