A POLITICAL ACTION By JACK MacKENZIE Regional 1st Vice-President UR Regional convention gave good trade union reasons for trade union direct political action in the current federal election campaign. The resolution adopted after a stirring address by Brother Tommy Douglas, unanimously approved the social and eco- nomic policies for industrial workers proposed by the New Democratic Party. All our Local Unions were urged to participate in the campaign to elect New Demo- cratic Party candidates in every B.C. federal riding. As we discuss campaign is- sues with our fellow workers, it would be wise to stress the points made by our conven- tion. They are, in brief: 1 National policies to be de- termined in the November 8 election are of vital import- ance to industrial workers. 2 Necessary social adjust- ment to technological change in industry presently requires new and more ade- quate national policies to en- sure greater job security. 3 Huge, monopolistic corpor- ations are financially sup- porting other parties, hoping to restrict free collective bar- gaining and strike action. They also propose deflation- ary measures that will breed more unemployment. 4 Liberal and Conservative policies of recruiting skilled workers in other countries with misleading propaganda before training resident work- ers for new job opportunities should be ended. 5 Policies for full employ- ment, job security, man- power adjustment and train- ing, pledged by the New Democratic Party, have been formulated on the advice of organized labour. The poll takers now esti- mate that 40% of the voters are at present undecided. The majority of these undecided voters are industrial workers, of which 17% are trade union members. They are mostly 40 years of age, and live in cities of 100,000 or more. These statistics certainly indicate that trade unions have an important role to play in this election campaign. To be more specific, this is what trade unionists in B.C. are urged to do. In Burnaby-Coquitlam, re- elect Tommy Douglas. In Burnaby-Richmond, ' re-elect Bob Prittie.
