McKnight to run in Port Alberni

George McKnight, prominent
Port Alberni trade unionist and
civic leader, announced this week
he will be a candidate for alder-
‘man inthe forthcoming civic elec-
tions.

In an announcement released
this week McKnight said that it
was his intention to speak out
and bring pressure to bear
wherever it is needed to bring
about a solution to any problem
which concerns the citizens of
Port Alberni.

Last year McKnight led a

campaign against the serious
problem of air pollution in the
Alberni valley, His campaign
helped influence the provincial
government to launch an investi-
gation into the problem in the
valley.

McKnight announced this week
that he had written to leaders
of federal parties as well as
candidates contesting the Comox-
Alberni federal riding, asking
them if they are in favor of
changes in the income tax regu-
lations to allow homeowners to
deduct their municipal taxes as

industry,

In this letter McKnight says
that it is ‘‘unfair that the home-
owner should be required to pay
income tax on the amount of
money that he or she hasalready
paid in municipal taxes while
business and industry is not re-
quired to do this,’’

He urges this situation be
remedied by a suitable change
in the income tax. regulations.
