nian front means to block, by
force, the way before our Pales-
tinian people and the exercising
of their right of. self-determina-

pletely with the Israeli aggres-

sive policy toward the destiny of

tive role of the Communist
Party is now the decisive ele-
ment in determining whether
we can take advantage of this
changing situation in a way that
can strengthen and reinforce
our party and its ability to
influence events.

Build the Party
- “If one thing stands out in

our convention, comrades, it is .

this—the necessity of fighting
day in and day out to build the
‘Communist Party. Because with-
out a Communist Party in Can-
ada nothing fundamental is
going to change in Canada.”

In important policy resolu-
tions delegates decided that
“twenty-five years of this coun-
try’s participation in NATO are
enough.” They called for Cana-
dian withdrawal, charging that
NATO, “as an intstrument of
reactionary imperialist circles”,
is propping up fascist and col-
onial regimes while holding this

‘country under U.S. military and

political domination.

Another resolution called for
the disbanding of a_ secret
emergency measures organiza-
tion the federal government has
set up to spy on progressive
and labor organizations, which
suggests measures to be taken
by police and armed forces.

(Many of these resolutions
will be reported on in future
issues.)

Inspiring Convention
William Kashtan was unani-
mously re-elected leader of -the

. Communist Party by the new

central committee of 62 men
and women chosen by the Con-
vention. The new central com-
mittee is responsible for carry-
ing out the policies decided
upon until the next convention.

As William Kashtan summed -
up, “I think all of ps would
agree that this has been an
inspiring and highly successful
convention of our Party ... I
don’t know of any other political
party in the country where the
membership and delegates have
the opportunity to express them-
. . to put forward their
criticisms, to express their atti-
tude on the basic positions that
the Party ought to take with
respect to the political situation
in the country”.

The Communist Party has
come out of the 22nd conven-
tion a united party, ready to do
battle in the interests of the
working class and people of

; Canada.
