a tisket... a tasket... an exhibition by Linda Doherty Opening reception: May 5th, 6-8pm, Exhibition: May 5th to 30, 2005, Gallery of BC Ceramics A tisket a tasket, you can’t put soup in a basket. “What do you do?” Im a potter. “What do you make?” Pots. “What kind of pots?” Mostly functional. These simple questions cause me to examine why I make functional pots. Even when I try to make a non-functional piece it usually ends up with a hole in the top or it is use- ful in some way. On rare occasions the position of a piece in the wood kiln causes it to become non-functional i.e. too cruddy to eat from. (Apologies to Paul Davis) In my 30 years of being a potter I have not limited myself to one style or method of working. I like to push the limits of clay and use it as you might use wood or glass or wicker: miter it or slump it or weave it. The function is not always obvious. When people see my pots, they often ask, “What can I use it for?” I used to find this annoying and wanted to reply “Use your imagination” but on reflection I should be grateful. Perhaps if no one can find a use for a piece we can call it Art. On the other hand [d rather say “You can’t put soup in a basket”.
