FAty. zizht Saturday, April 1st, Tickets can now be into Liberal election pool CITY COUNCILLOR David Hull has become the first person to say he wants to be the B.C. Lib- eral candidate here in-the next provincial election, Although he admits he isn’t an active Liberal and is at odds with some Lib-. eral policies, Hull says he - wants to be part of.a new government to Teplace. the NDP. And at the very least, Hull says’ he: wants a vi- gorous campaign to decide the Liberal nomination for Skeena. : “I think one of. the big mistakes last time was it was a coronation instead of a race,” said Hull of the 1996 campaign in. which Kitimat mayor Rick Woz- ney was chosen as the Libera! candidate. “[ think you're legiti-: macy as a.candidate is stronger out there if you’ve gone through a nomination contesl,” he said, - Hull said he realizes he might not be an accept- able candidate to the Lib- eral party. - “You have to ask your- self if you’re going to be of the people, by the people and for the people or of the ‘a referendum on people, by the people and for Gordon Campbell.” “T can tell you one thing that if I’m elected, 1 wan't be a good little Lib- eral. I'll be.an MLA as I see fit for the area.” As for -policy issues, Hull was: in favour of the. NDP purchase of. Skeena Cellulose and supports the Nisga’a land claims treaty ='both oppased by Camp- bell and the Liberal oppo- ition. a m not in favour of bail outs or. governments getting into business, but there was no way a gov-. ernment could sit by and watch a whole Tegion” go down the tubes,” said Hull of the Skeena Cellulose situation, » And- he doubts that Campbell's plans to have land claims principles is realis- tic. ' “The courts have said deal with it. So let’s get on with it,” Hull said of land claims treaties. Hull, 41, is a business development consultant and was elected to council last fall for a fourth term. One other rumoured candidate is Kitimat Royal Bank to eliminate some positions JOB CUTS are coming to the Royal Bank later this month. The Terrace branch expects to cut the equivalent of three full-time positions, said branch manager Dave Wilson. He’s not yet sure whether actual layoffs will result, or whether employees affected will be able to move into other vacant positions or take severance buyouts. “We’re going through a process of centralization of some duties at the end of March,” he said. Staff affected are primarily those who handle back- ground tasks and processing of paperwork, Wilson said. Some: of that. work ‘is being moved to Royal Bank of- fices ‘elsewhere. «> ~* “There: is-no reduction in the full-time staff facing the public,” he said. “What's going is the background duties.” About 35 employees work at the branch, although the number of full-time equivalents is closer to 27, Wilson said banks are under continued pressure to cut costs and increase efficiency, “Banking is much more global,” Wilson said. “Our competition is coming from over the Internet and over- seas these days. We've got to streamline.” Health meet this Friday THE PUBLIC gets a chance to air ils vision for north- western health care this Friday at a meeting hosted by the Terrace and Area Health Council.
