Wrestler Tom Petryshen and basketball player Eli Pasquale saw around 900 kids from grades 4 through 12 during their presenta- tious. - The pair are part of a team of 40 olympic and world- ‘class athletes. who travel to schools across B.C. to send positive messages of self- esteem, decision-making and goal setting. “When we talk to them their cyes light up and you know they're paying atten- tion,’ says Petryshen of the students. Petryshen says — local teachers did an excellent job of getting kids excited about the presentations before hand. Pelryshen was an olympic wrestler and has been part of the tour for two years. He started in wrestling at the age of 13. Much smaller than the ma- jorily of wrestlers, he speaks about overcoming obstacles and selting goals. “We tell kids lo keep their minds open, So many kids only ‘sce what’s in front of them,’ he says. Older skaters had a busy season of competition and finished off with a number of awards. Most improved junior Skater went to Jennifer Roy and Amy Mattern, with the intermediate awards going to Erin Amdt and Kim Wil- prized COX. Most improved — seniors were Lee-Ania Huisman and Kaisa Lamb. Other awards included Gold Feet plaques, which went to Grace Mitchell for Gold dance and Kendra Eys for Gold artistic. Nicole Lindsay and Nicole Wilcox shared the title of niost sporstmanlike, The most dedicated amateur instricior award was given to Danny Miller.
