Al McGowan has a patent pending on his curling aid, a device that helps disabled curlers get back into their sport. McGowan has spent the last year touring around the pro- vince and around westem Canada promoting his innova- tive product. ‘It’s been a weird and wonderful year,’) McGowan gays. ; “P'm-in debt $36,000 to this thing,-but I’m-not giving up.” McGowan says he’s had great response from curlers and the media about his two different models of curling aid, but strangely, sales have been slow. “ft don’t know why,’”’ he says. ‘‘People seem to love it but they often stop short of buying it, Maybe they don’t want to be the first people in their rink to get one,”’ McGowan tells a story of one man who had been curling at the Farmer’s Bonspiel in Red Deer, Alta. for 38 years. This year he couldn't curl because he wasn’t able to bend his knees and slide along the ice like he used to. The man read an article about McGowan’s device in a local newspaper so he drove 70 km to a demonstration at a nearby curling club. "He tied it and within three rocks he was putting them in the house,’’ McGowan says. ‘‘He was really gung-ho. Then [ told him they cost $296 and he backed right off. That guy just floored me. He could have been curling again that weekend.” McGowan says he'll keep plugging away at promoting his unique aid. Last week, he got orders for five units, and a 75-year-old man called to thank him for leaving a demonstration model at a rink. He told McGowan that it was the first time in years that La Towing Available ‘| 3220 RIVER DR. ‘| TERRACE, B.C. That place Is beginning to smell like there's no tamorrow.” Arthur had just stamped into the farm house, his rubber boots covered with mud. “Just calm down, now, Arthur. Can't be everywhere at once. The dog had con- vulsians and | had to take him Just came back.” . “Sorry, Gloria, it's not like me to be this irritated. But I'm really bothered. That monster of an inspector from the Alberta Egg Producers Board is coming tomorrow to inspect aur hens, and there's going to be fireworks.” Gloria looked puzzled. “Why, because | didn’t clean out the hen house?” “That's the least of our worries. No, the problem is that the eggs in Canada is a regulated product, Alberta doesn't want too many hens producing too many eggs. Otherwise the prices will get too low.” “So why should there be fireworks tomorrow?" Arthur wiped the perspiration off his brow. "Because we have 6000 hens and we're only allowed to have 300!" Arthur was right. There was fireworks. The couple received an order from the Board telling them to get rid of 5,700 hens. Arthur was furious. “We're a farming couple. We're not rich. But we can't make a proper living on 300 hens. Why should we have to live poor when all the city peo- ple who eat our eggs live rich.” But rant and rave though they did, the couple caved in, They got rid of the . hens. Next year, the inspector came back again. “When are you guys going to learn. to the vet. . HE JUDGE .. BY CLAIRE BERNSTEIN Dent Count our Eggs Bee Thee Laid oxy BASED ON _ ACTUAL COURT CASES Those are 3,440 hens in your house. You know what the regulations are. Get rid of them.” Arthur was ready. “Not all our hens, Matthew. 264 hens are curs. That's weil below the 300 hen limit. The other 3,176 hens belong to a number of our neigh- bors.” “Get them out, 300 hens means just that 300 hens.” Arthur and Gloria answered with one volce. “No way!” The Board tock them to court. The Board presented their side. “Your Honour, this whole scheme is a scam. Arthur and Gloria are just trying to avoid the regulations. We have never seen any of the agreements with the neighbors. We have recelved no com- plaint about their hens being removed from Arthur and Gloria's property. Make them get rid of the extra hens.” Arthur and Gloria told their story. “Your Honour, we only own 264 hens. The.number of hens the regulations allow us to have. The rest belong to our neigh- bors. Not everyone can afford to bulid an egg production facitity, We decided to lease our extra space to them. Don't let the Board take away our leasing business.” Should Arthur and Gloria have to remove the hens fer the Board? You!
