TERRACE AND KISPIOX OLDTIMERS pose for a photo following their championship game at the -Oldtimers’ Soccer Tourney on June 24, Local oldies win soccer The Terrace oldtimers put together a string of four wins in a row-to capture their own old- timers’ soccer tournament at Skeena and Caledonia school grounds on June 24 weekend. The six-team series of over-35 players used a double-knockout ‘format. In the opening ‘games, Kit- wancool downed Kitwanga and Terrace beat Kitsegukla. Next it was the two teams with byes seeing action on ‘A’ side. Kispiox defeated . Kitwancool, while Terrace took out Kitimat. On the losers side, Kitimat: and Kitwancool eliminated Kit- wanga and Kitsegukla, respec- tively, Then it was Kitimat blanking Kitwancool 6-0 to gain a place in the ‘B’ side final. Kispiox lost a tight 1-0 deci- sion to Terrace in the ‘A’ side final, so Kispiox dropped down to battle Kitimat for the other berth in the championship game against Terrace, : Kispiox got another shot at. sepat , for Terrace. , Terrace by edging Kitimat 3-2. The title match was strictly one-sided with Terrace running up a 6-0 lead and continuing on to a 6-1 victory. Individual honors went to Terrace’s Richard Hugon as high scorer, and his teammate Errol Stevens as most valuable player, Kitwancool had the most _sportsmanlike team. Two injuries marred proceed- ings. Hugon suffered a broken wrist, but still won the scoring ti- tle. Mike Brady wound up witha separated: shoulder. Terrace Minor Softball wound up its home season June 24 weekend at Elks Park by hosting the final three divisional tourneys. . In the bantam girls’ division, six teams competed in round- robin action with each team playing four games. The top two then advanced to a champion- ship final. Smithers (with four straight wins) met Terrace Alm-Wood in the final. Alm-Wood with a three-and-one mark beat Smithers 10-6 for the title. The peewee girls’ division had “seven teams, but they used the same format as the bantams. Terrace’s Michelle Hendry re- tained her place on the Canadian women’s basketball team in try- outs at Vancouver this week. It means she'll leave Sunday for the world championships at Malaysia. Kitimat’s Issy Marynschak also iried for the team, but failed to earn a spot in the top 12. Hendry and her mates will practice after arriving in Southeast Asia on July 4 until meeting Brazil in their opening game on the 12th. Then they play Russia on the 13th and Japan on the 14th.
