Ad Terrace Review — Wednesday, February 28, 1990 Please, don’t even consi TERRACE-- The Surrey Siting Task Force is looking for a place to dump 4,000 cubic meters of "low-level" radioactive waste but it’s unlikely it will end up here. After a quick glance at the task force’s proposal the Kitimat- Stikine Regional District board was unanimous in saying, "no way". Hazelton director Alice Maitland suggested the board should write a letter to task force chairman, Dr. David Boyes, saying: "Please... don’t even consider us." In a letter to the regional district Boyes says the task force was formed last October by federal Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, Jake Epp to find a home for 300 tonnes of slag presently stored in barrels at two Surrey industrial sites. He explains the slag is the waste product left after smelting niobium to recover its content of naturally-occuring _ thorium and uranium. - According to Boyes, the govern- ment wants a better managed, more permanent site for the waste and all B.C. communities are being - asked for their "voluntary particip- ation" in the selection process. He says their may be something in it for the community selected, such as employment created by monitor- ing or leachate collection systems. In his letter, Boyes is reassuring. "The Task Force has the responsi- bility to ensure that the safety of the environment and human health are not compromised in any way." Doug Smith takes Strong | Communities posting _ Terrace resident Doug Smith has been hired as the facilitator for the Strong Communities in the 90’s program. Smith has been a resident of Terrace since 1983 and an employee of CFTK since 1979. His first job in the Northwest was with CFTK in Kitimat. A year later he left the broadcasting firm to do some public relations work for Alcan in Smithers and rejoined CFTK in 1982. He worked in Prince Rupert. for nine months before being transferred to Terrace in 1983. Since moving to the northwest, Smith has served as a Kitimat school trustee for one year and a Terrace alderman for just over two years. City administrator Bob Hallsor says Smith was recommended to the Ministry of Regional Develop- ment by the city, who then offered _ hima five-month contract with the Strong Communities in the 90’s program. According to Hallsor, the position begins March 5 and on March 6 Smith will be joined by city economic development officer Peter Montieth, Terrace city council’sEconomic Development Committee chairman Dave Hull and Tourism and Economic Advis- ory Commission representative Rich McDaniel for a three-day orientation workshop in Vancouver. Smith says that Montieth has done an "excellent" job in develop- ing an economic development strategy for Terrace and he will now be working with Montieth to implement the programs identified in the strategy. Much of this work, he says, will be done through local workshops and seminars. The Strong Communities in the 90’s program was originally designed for a year-long, part-time BY-LAW the City of Terrace. THOMAS ST. When asked about future employment prospects, Smith said: "| give it one hundred percent for five months and then see what 1 other opportunities arise." But this reassurance is a little less than comforting when in the same ‘letter he also offers a compen- ‘station package "to offset impacts _ which cannot be avoided". With this mix of assurance and insurance, perhaps the. best response is the one offered by. the regional board. On the other hand, having listened earlier to an hour or more of debate on the Forest — Charter of Rights, board chairman Jack Talstra offered another view that may have some substarice as der us well. "After all the trees are cut we have to do something with the land," he quipped at the close of the discussion. | Give... to the Heart Fund. — B.C.
