Roberts works with a number of local programs and agencies — the Mills Memorial Hospital romote prenatal program, the Women’s Resource Centre, Birthrite, Northwest Drug and Alcohol Counselling, and others — and uses -them .as.:referral agencies for women involved in ‘‘Build- - ing Healthier Babies’’. Potential clients are identified by several . means, including referrals from the. medical. community and public health personnel. Women who enroll in the program are encouraged to im- prove their nutrition, cut down or eliminate damage from con- sumption of tobacco,. alcohol and drugs, plan for breast feed- ing after birth, and are provided tional support during their life- style transition. The Terrace program is the only one in the region now, but there ‘is. a possibility of starting a second program in Hazelton, Roberts noted, ~ The program is seeking volun- teer counsellors willing to offer emotional support through their pregnancies. Roberts is the pro- gram coordinator, and she is assisted by secretary Monique Malenfant at the Child Develop- ment Centre and nuitritionist Linda McMynn. Personnel with other involved agencies are Don- na Dickie at the Skeena Health Unit and alcohol and drug coun- ‘sellor Sue Higgins.
