The Jand of Shinar, which is
the same as the land of Sumer, is
in Iraq and lies between the Tigris
and the Euphrates rivers.

Here archaeology has uncovered
an ancient civilization long forgot-
ten,

Leonard Cottrell, who is so dili-
gent in reconstructing ancient:
civilizations, has endeavored to
bring it back to us in his book
“The Land of Shinar.”

Unfortunately, he excavates and
speculates and quotes and compat-
es and leaves the reader in a
state of uncertainty.

Although brief, this is a scholar-
ly book and requires study rather
than reading, Even the illustra-
tions are of a scholarly nature,
and then at the end of the book
is a list of Sumerian kings, show-
ing the various dynasties.

“We greet you from our dun-
geon,” wrote editor John Rob-
son in 1862 at New Westminster.
He had been thrown in jail for
insulting Judge Matthew Baillie
Begbie. But though ke lan-
quished then with a dying mani-
ac om one side and a murderer's
chains clanking on the other, he
was to hecome premier of Brit-
ish Columbia in years to come

John Robson was born in
Perth, Upper Canada in 1824 of
Scottish parents. He was attract-
ed to the west by the Fraser
gold rush, arriving in 1859. But
after a spell in the Cariboo he
settled in New Westminster,

represent Nanaimo in the first
provincial legislature. He declin-
ed a seat in the McCreight cab-
inet and retired from politics
in 1875 for a position with the
Canadian Pacific Railway, But
in 1879 he was back in New
Westminster. He bought another
paper and reramed it after his
old “British Columbian, in 1982.

Elected again to the legisla-
ture, he was Provincial Secre-
tary, Minister of Mines, and Min-
ister of Finance and Agricul-
ture. In 1889 he hecame premier
and three years later, he died
in office.

launching a newspaper, the ‘Bri-
tish Columbian,” in 1861. His
trouble with Begbie arose when
Robson published a letter which
suggested Begbie made unfair
Jand dealings. After four days
in jail, Robson apologized and
was freed. He campaigned for
Begbie’s removal but Begbie be-
came chief justice despite him.
John Robson wags elected to
the Legislative Council in 1866.
In 1869 he moved his paper to
Victoria then sold it and be-
eame editor of the “British Colo-
nist. In 1871 he was @lected to
