LOCAL 1-71 MEMBERS VOTING ON STRIKE BALLOT THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER WELDWOOD SAWMILL CREW ADOPTS KOREAN YOUNGSTER Thirty-five IWA members and two foremen employed at the Weldwood Sawmill in Quesnel, have joined together to adopt a seven year old Korean boy through the aus- pices of the ‘Foster Parents Plan,’ one of the numerous humanitarian agencies which devote their efforts to feed- ing, clothing and schooling, children left homeless in the war-torn areas of the world. The Foster Parents Plan operates by a number of in- dividuals forming into a group and contributing one dollar per member per month for the upkeep of a starving or or- phaned: child. When a group adopts a child, The Foster Parents Plan agency keeps a record of those who contribute, provides a history of the child plus a photograph and all the neces- sary information to communi- cate with the adoptee. ; When the child writes to his foster. parents they receive the original letter plus a translation supplied by the Plan. As an indication of the expanse of this operation, 37,000 letters per month are being translated. The child adopted by the Quesnel group is Kim: Chi Moon, who lives in a card- board and canvas hovel with his mother and 13-year-old KIM CHI MOON Seven year old Korean boy who was adopted by 35 members of the Weldwood Sawmill crew in Quesnel under the Foster Parents Plan. sister. Prior to his adoption by the group, Kim, his sister and mother lived on, the 31 cents a day she made working in a popcorn factory. (Kim’s father died in 1967 after the family fled from Nort Korea). : With the money from the Quesnel employees, Kim can now attend school and the family has sufficient funds to allow them to function as a family-unit free from want. The man responsible for starting the group at the mill and who did most of the or- ganizing, Job Steward Earl Allen, reported that the adop- tion move has brought the crew closer together and everybody in the mill is tak- ing an active interest in Kim’s progress. Even the Company has taken an interest and has sup- plied a glass case in the saw- mill lunchroom in which to display the various letters, pictures, etc., which the crew receives from Kim. ; Allen added that the Plan will forward individual re- ceipts as donations are tax deductible, but no one in the mill is interested. As one East Indian put it, “This is a Korean boy, but maybe some- one is doing the same for a bay in India.” COAST STRIKE VOTE RESULTS Loggers, 1-71 Duncan, 1-80 __. Port Alberni, 1-85 Victoria, 1-118 Vancouver, 1-217 New Westminster, 1-357 Courtenay, 1-363 Haney, 1-367 Total LIGHTER SIDE Two English magistrates were cycling home together at night, without lights, when they were stopped by a police- man, They were duly charged and, when their cases came up for hearing the next day, they agreed that each should Jeave the bench in turn to have his case heard by the other, The first went into the dock, pleaded guilty and was promptly fined ten shillings. When they had changed places, the second magistrate, after pleading - guilty, was shocked to receive a 15-shill- ing fine. “That’s a bit unfair,” he complained. “I fined you only ten shillings.” “I know,” replied his col- league haughtily. “But there’s entirely too much of this sort of thing going on. This is the second case we’ve tried to- day.” —The English Digest .’) oo i) == CONFESS... that’s why we at KLM say: THE KLM GUIDE wish-you-were-here country Aren't you Just a little tired of being on the recelving end of Postcards from Europe?
