‘house of Sholem Country-wide protests continue to come in toExternal Affairs Minister Howard Green at Ottawa, condemning the policy of his department which barred the Girls’ Bandurist Trio of Kiev (above) from coming to Canada under sponsorship of The Ukrainian Cana- dian newspaper. Editors of the paper have challenged the ruling as “harmful and dis- criminatory” and called for a review of the decision. The Bandurist Trio has perform- ed in France, England, Scotland, the People’s .Democracies, Egypt and India. UJPO Drama Workshop displays falent in Sholem Aleichem play Joining in what has become a great world-wide celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sholem Aleich- em, Jewish folk writer and deep humanist, the Drama Workshop of the Vancouver Jewish Peoples Order honored the occasion with a fine pres- entation of Tevya and His Daughters in two performan- es in the York Theatre over the past weekend. One of the most charming stories from the great treasure Aleichem’s dramatic writings on the lives and struggles of his people in Old Russia, the story of Tevya -the milkman, his wife Golde, their household of beautiful and marriageable daughters, and the folks of his commun- ity, was no small undertaking for the UJPO drama group. Nevertheless, and _ despite many handicaps ‘in staging, “props”, etc., the UJPO drama group came back, after nearly two years of theatre inactiv- ity with a highly commend- able performance, heartily ap- plauded by an _ appreciative ‘audience at both performan- ces. While the whole cast in Tevya and His Daughters de- serve high praise for their performance, the heaviest role was carried by Searle Fried- man as Tevya, with Sylvia Friedman as his wife Golde, both doing a splendid job in interpreting the homely folk warmth, humor and humanity of the immortal Sholem AI- eichem. Tim Buck’s mew tract A 24-page tract entitled Peace Through Disarmament, by Tim Buck will be off the presses this month. It will be filled with facts and arguments to drive home the need for an all-out united drive by Canadians on this central issue. It will be inval- uable in combatting the dan- gerously mistaken idea that disarmament will lead to mass unemployment. The tract will sell for five cents. ' Specal praise is also due Arleen Jackson as Tevya’s oldest daughter Tzeitl, to Rick- ie Zuker as second daughter Hodel, who follows her newly- wed revolutionary husband in- to Siberian exile — an episode in which the great humanity and understanding of Tevya is brilliantly displayed. Stu Kennedy in the role of Lazar Wolfe, the well-to-do community butcher, who drove a hard bargain with Tevya for the heart and hand of daughter Tzeitl (but with- out success when wife Golde put her Tevya straight on such matters) did a fine job. There were flaws in the ov- erall presentation, but none to the discredit of the UJPO drama group which preserved the deep social contest, homely wit and humor, and the close kinsnip with his people in their joys and ageless strug- gles, which characterize the great works of Sholem Aleich- em. That abiding essence was well illustrated in the UJPO Drama Workshop presentation of Tevya and His Daughters. RADIO-TV_ Sounds of the City evokes discussion Readers of the Pacific rather than the radio station. Tribune may well have missed a thoughtful, unusual and sometimes provocative radio program which has been on CKWX at 9:05 p.m. Sundays for the past two months. Called Sounds of the City, this 55-minute .program”™ is sponsored by the UBC Exten- sion Department and will con- tinue until next spring. It originated in a discussion held by Alan Thomas (head of Communications at UBC) with former CKWX manager, the late “Tiny” Elphicke, who agreed to advance a sum of money for the “creative use” of radio. A further sum was added to this from the Koerner Foundation. The program’s policy is determined by a spe- cial faculty committee at UBC Under the guidance of pro- ducer Bill Ballentine, Sounds of the City has extended into many facets of city life with the creative use of tape record- ing in the field, panels, inter- views, etc. Recent subjects have in- cluded organized charity, com- mercial radio, Remembrance Day, children’s ideas about Santa Claus and teenagers’ ap- proach to sex. This coming Sunday, Dec- ember 6, will be devoted to civic politics. - Among contributors to the series are Barbara Green, Bill McCarthy, Laurence Nowry, Alan Thomas and Jack Wass- erman. N. E.
