eee rn ONE ew hh LL N. VIETNAM VICTIM _5. AGGRESSION W orld peace threatened ‘ee Editorial The U.S. has announced that it has made 64 air strikes against five areas in North Vietnam. The reason given by President Johnson for these acts of ar is that the U.S. fleet was attacked by North Viet- 2am torpedo boats on Aug. 2 and again on Aug. 4. He called “open aggression on the high seas.” But there is more than a little reason to be suspicious of these U.S. charges. It just doesn’t make sense that little North Vietnam Suld send out a handful of tiny torpedo boats to make an "Nprovoked attack on the U.S. fleet on the high seas. Furthermore, according to press reports, the North Victhamese have labelled the U.S. charges as “sheer fabri- lon.” N And in any case, what is the U.S. fleet doing patrolling orth Vietnamese shores? Is this not a provocation? We've heard only one side of the story so far — the propaganda story of the U.S. state department. We have still to hear from North Vietnam. What it amounts to is this: The U.S., in retaliation for alleged attacks which it admits caused no damage or casual- ties is raining down death and destruction on North Viet- nam towns and homes. ; There is every reason to believe that the alleged at- tacks by torpedo boats on the U.S. fleet were not the reason for the U.S. bombings of North Vietnam. They were only the excuse: , It is common knowledge that the Pentagon has been itching to extend the war in south east Asia. Failing to win its war against the people of South Vietnam, U.S. military leaders have been advocating war on North Vietnam. Senator Goldwater has been thing. No wonder he is now the latest action of President demanding the same expressing satisfaction with Johnson. The U.S. attacks on North Vietnam, which are ag- gression in every meaning of the term, mean that President Johnson has now given in to these pressures. He says the war will be limited. But how can it be? Are the North Vietnamese just supposed to sit and take it? And what about the allies of North Vietnam? No, these inexcusable attacks on North Vietnam have greatly increased the danger of this war spreading to all of Asia and to the whole world. These U.S. attacks must cease! The U.S. must end its “dirty war” against the people of both North and South Vietnam. Canada should make this demand at the U.N. This is what Canadians want and will support.
