Kashtan, a YCL-er of the 1920's,
who led the youth first in his
native Montreal and then na-
tionally, helped to pilot the
great Canadian Youth Congress
movement of the 1930’s, has for
four decades been a tower of
strength for the Canadian work-
ing class and its party. He is
flanked by YCL graduate Nor-
man Freed. . . but I will not
continue: the list, there is no
room and I would be sure to
omit persons who simply must
not be omitted! Suffice it to
add that of the provincial lead-
ers of the party Samuel Walsh
in Quebec, William Ross in
Manitoba and Bill Tuomi in
Alberta are ‘‘old YCL-ers,” as
are Pacific Tribune editor Maur-
ice Rush and Bill Beeching and
the writer on the Canadian
Tribune staff).

I could keep listing remark-
able people in various fields of
the people’s struggle who “got
that way” in the YCL: “Ukrain-
jan Life and Word” editor Nick
Hrynchyshyn, and Mitch Sago
and Mary Skrypnyk of the
“Ukrainian Canadian,” Winni-
peg public figure Mary Kardash,
Vancouver writer Ben Swankey
and so many others.

Pictures of past YCL doings
glide across my mind’s eye: the
free speech fight in Toronto, the
battles of the jobless in the
Hungary Thirties and those who
like Mike Gilmore coughed out
their lungs . - - the lads who
volunteered — and those who
died — in Spain, in World War
Two, the myriad of struggles in
which young Communists
fought in the front ranks.

As you are planning the way
to the future, young comrades,
remember those who helped to

Just the beginning —

_ Almost lost in a spate of name calling
in the august legislative chambers in
Ottawa this week was the fact that the
two major labor bodies in Canada rep-
resenting 2,000,000 organized workers
told the government to stuff its wage
guideline policy.

_ real essense of the presentations by the

Canadian Labor Congress and the
Quebec-based Confederation of Na-
tional Trade Unions, which pinned the
responsibility for inflation at the door-
step of the government and corpora-
tions in Canada and the Vietnam war
in the USA and refused to put up the
working people as the sacrificial lamb.

This was welcome relief to the comic

opera being acted out by Benson and
Trudeau and saturating the living
rooms of Canadian homes through the
mass media, with the labor movement
playing the unwilling role as the
victim.
_ In the welter of opinion which is now
in vogue about the perils of pollution
to life and limb, little is said about
managed news which pollutes the
minds of people with the downright
malicious lie that workers’ income is a
cause of inflation in Canada.

It is good that the two main trade
union centres in Canada should have
cut through that lie and placed on the
record the position of those who pro-
duce the values of Canadian life.

It is at the same time unfortunate
and a mark of the cynicism of Cana-
dian journalism that the attention of
the Canadian people should have been
distracted from the importance of that
message by invective hurled between
Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Chartrand from
the CNTU. ;

Mr. Chartrand may have won the
exchange in the house, but Mr. Tru-
deau won it in the country. Most peo-

ple will have hidden from them the

main message of the CLC and the

CNTU, between the verbal gymnastics _

of Chartrand and Trudeau.
The CLC and the CNTU will have to

move far beyond the realm of briefs to
governments if they intend to give
meaningful leadership to the working
people in this struggle.

It will have to help put muscle into
the current wage drive shaping up
across the country, join in and lead
every manifestation of resistance from
Newfoundland to Victoria and help
blend them into a mighty movement
which will wring fresh victories for the
working people and inflict stunning de-
feats on the big monopoly interests who
are presently running Canada.

The economic part of the CLC and
CNTU briefs to Ottawa can be a start-
ing point for this battle, but that’s all
it is, not anexcuse to sit idly by until
next year’s presentation.

ment which blackened our country’s
past. Students in our high schools and
universities are increasingly demand-
ing the long denied democratization of
our educational system. Youth forms a
large and vital part of every action
against the aggressions of U.S. imper-
ialism abroad and its racism at home;
and more and more these struggles are
being linked’ to the fight for the inde-
pendence of our own country.

What an opportunity and challenge
all this presents to a militant organiza-
tion of young people drawing on the
science of Marxism-Leninism to help
forge the unity of the youth in that
great national, democratic, anti-mono-
poly, anti-imperialist coalition led by
the working class which will open the
way to a socialist Canada.

It is in the thick of these battles of
the coming years that the YCL will
grow ever stronger.
