Guild News It alway$ seems that | have so much information to pass an and 50 little space to da so - this month is no exception, espectally given that this newsletter is the last ame until the end ef August. Firstly, some lang awaited news (s that the outstanding amount of our loan is now less than $4000, well ahead of our planned payment schedule. Several workshops have been organized in conjunction with Shadbolt Centre forthe Arts. In July, a3 many of you are hopefully already awara, Linda Sikora (July &) and Neil Forrest (July 27) will both be doing one day worksheps for $32.19. Twa additional ofganizations, ECIAD and the Fraser Valley Potters’ Guild, are invelved in cospensaring a workshop by Takeshi Yasuca (see Ceramics Review 151 p. 10-17 or Ceramics: Art and Perception No, 149. 3-8 for articles on him). This is set fer October 19th and 20th at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, The Gallery of BC Ceramics looks forward to the possibility of showing some of Takeshi's pieces while he is in town. Last month in this calumn | alluded to the Christmas Gift and Food Festival taking gtace at the Caliseurn in November, As promised, more information has been provided in the insert with this newsletter, The organizer attended Made in Clay and thinks that a group of about 10 people could be placed in a very prominent area - a show within a show, Coming up mere quickly than Christmas is Canada Day! CMHC is combining a grand reopening of the Waterpark with a community celebration. The entire area around the Waterpark, just across the street from the Gallery, will be transformed with lots of entertainment, craft booths, a great big cake and loads of prizes. Estimates indicate an attendance of 100,000 party guests. The Guild has been asked to put together a community booth showcasing our organization; the focus will be ongoing demonstrations, but information about the local guilds, courses available, atc. will also be avaliable for distribution. | will be contacting the membership to put together a roster of volunteers {2 hour shift, 2 peeple per shift, total 8 people) but if you really want to be a part of this, please call me. The next large event planned is taking place throughout the city of Vancouver during the month of October. Bravo Vancouver, jointly organized by the Vancouver Cultural Alliance and the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, this event will highlight the arts of Vancouver via 3 main components. One is the publication of a magazine/pragramme which will list all arts related activities happening in the greater Vancouver area during October, A second avenue is participation in the Arts X- Change, where potential audiences can x-change a movie receipt, Priya 7 for example, for a discounted ticket for an arts events. The third i$ the concept for showcasing the arts in various office tawers ang shopping areas throughout the downtawr core. The Guild ig Planning to participate in all three activities. More information will be included in the next newsletter, The next Board meeting is Monday, July 4, 7 pm at the Guild office. Gallery News Despite the grim pradictions made last month regarding the sales lavel in the Gallery, this last week of May (when the sun finally appeared again) has had a positive impact At this paint, with 2 days to go, sales are still short of our target-by about $1000 or 5.9% but, overall the figures remain ahead of last years sales to date by about a4. The Gallery was sad to lose both Melanie Corbin, who has gone to Calgary for the summer, and Tamara Gall, who accested a summer position at Island Mountain Arts in Wells. In order to maintain sufficent staff levels for the busy months, the Gallery has hired Aeron Nelson as another part-time assistant. Aaron has just completed 2nd year at ECIAD (ceramics major) and will bring a high level of knowledge and enthusiasm to the Gallery. So, don't be alarmed if a male voice is on the other end of the telephone when you call... May's Gallery exhibit, Fountains and Waterfalls by Celia and Keith Rice-Jones has received very positive reaction from the public; one of their fountains is travelling all the way to Montreal! In June, the Gallery locks forward to Patrick Taddy’s A Matter of Scale, and Other Things, an exhibit of handbuilt & slipcast stoneware and porcelain flasks. June's feature artist of the month is raku potter Heather Chapman. Ouring the month of July, Simon Ho, who was also accepted by the jury to display his work on an ongoing basis in the Gallery, will have his exhibit Nature and Feelings. The opening is currently scheduled for Thursday, July 4th, but this is ta be confirmed by the artist. July's feature artist will be Sue Kavanaugh. In August Elaine Brewer-White opens Shameful Behaviour on August 1, from 6-8 pm. The show will be up until September 1. A. feminder that the July 31st deadline for submitting exhibit proposals for 1997 is rapidly approaching. Please find the guidelines and application form on page § of this newsletter.
