Christmas just isn’t the same without family.

- No matter what I do, it just doesn’t
° feel like Christmas,in Guatemala. And
_ ve tried. I’ve gone to the lighting of
‘the 30 metre, artificial, “Gallo Tree”
(Gallo’s: a. beer) which has 17,000 .
lights.

‘I’ve gone. to the market and looked

at Christmas decorations. I’ve. gone
’ .to the modern’mall and attempted ‘to
“Christmas shop”. I’ve gone to nearby

communities with my organization and

. distributed food for the holiday season. .

I’ve gone to Central Park and listened
to a children’s symphony play Christ-
mas carols.

What’s missing? Maybe, its because

- its 20 degrees Celsius here during the

Does Christmas equal cold and-

snow? Not always, in. Terrace Christ-
mas often equals rain and gloomy
days.
Is Christmas about buying gifts?
Perhaps, but I have ‘even tried to go
Christmas “shopping. in the mall that
could be Pacific Centre. Shopping for
your. host family is not the same as
shopping for your real family.

Is Christmas about the tree? Could
be. In my house here, we do have a tree
but I don’t know the story behind one
single ornament nor did I hand make

any of them as a child. ~
Is Christmas about eating turkey

and drinking eggnog? Perhaps. . Here

they eat Tamales, made from cornmeal
