Two dents. SARAH ARTIS PHOTO . eo CONTRIBUTED By BOB HASPECK — JULY 14TH, 1994 was a "day I’ll never forget. Neither will my dog “Skeena.” We had been living in an isolated cabin some eight kilometres from the. Yellowhead Highway. The dog was a form’ of protection in this _ self-imposed isolation. I had decided | that day . to hike the eight kilometres _ from the road instead of tak- “ing the more: comfortable _ passenger train. The ‘first . _half- hour of the tek down the rail line was at a casual pace. But this ended sudden- dy. Skeena stopped abruptly! Her tail curled up as she ‘stared intently at something coming down. the bank on’ our right. When she stopped, I stopped. - My first’ thought was '. “BEAR!” Sure © enough. Down the bank came a black’ furry thing. About half the size of my dog. The cub totally ignored us, its atten- ;tion drawn -to dandelions- ue ‘Strawberries * ‘growing . ong the rail line. Then! . Here comes Momma! And she was not pleased. Her instincts told her. to pro- tect her baby from danger. Skeena was closest. The sow charged. A black blur, spin- ning in a clockwise motion was all I could see. I’d lost the dog! Where’s my dog? Two complete revo- lutions. Then the dance changed direction. Both animals headed my way. A few metres in front of me, the process repeated. This time, I saw my dog.. Sort of. She clamped onto a teat and hung on for all she was worth, doing her best to turn the bear away. Undaunted, the bear charged again. I lost -on guard CONST. Rochelle Paten- , aude stands at attention at the unveiling of a 30-year old totem pole in the front lobby of Skeena Junior Sec- ondary. And where — | ‘to rin? T: “képt ‘the: pack on and’ teadied “mnyself for the worst. The young. sow’s open jaw was an arms length from my head, level with my left shoulder. I swung the ski pole, hard, making good contact with the left side of her jaw. My regular walking stick, a one inch thick birch pole, would have broken her jaw. Though unhurt, the blow was enough to change her mind. She veered right and headed for «the bush. Her left shoulder making ‘contact with my left shoul- der, knocking me.on my . backside.
