video connections to
help northwest psychia-
tric services, says a se-
nior health care official
based in Terrace.

For now, the equipment
— monitors and cameras —
is stored in boxes but Dor-
othy Jennings wants to
soon change thal.

“There’s no question
that’s where we want to
go,” said Jennings, the
new northwest director of
mental health services, of
the idea of connecting
psychiatrists with patients
throughout the northwest.

“We see this as a valu-
able tool. to link up with
Temote areas, not only
throughout the northwest
but for secondary and ter-
tiary care with facilities
such as Riverview and
Vancouver General Hospi-
tal.”

Jennings has asked pro-
fessionals in the field of
adult mental health
throughout the northwest to
help come up with a plan.

She expects something
to be ready for considera-
tion early in the new year.

“There’s incredible po-
tential and a commitment
to make it work.”

Psychiatric services is
just one of several areas of
health care in the north-
west to embrace the con-
cept of using real-time
video technology.

Mills Memorial Hospi-
tal in Terrace already uses
the technology for continu-
ing education and a direct
connection between its
emergency room with trau-
ma specialists at Vancou-
ver General Hospital is ex-
pected early in the new
year.

The technology is also
the latest example of the

local RCMP.

“The rowdies were
contained,” said Cpl. Scott
Lovell.

He said the evening —-
known for parties and
drinking — was quiet until
just after midnight when
calls did start coming in.

Perhaps the most unus-

ual of the calls involved’

police arresting a
“psychotic male” who was
taken to Mills Memorial
Hospital.

“He was on LSD and
obviously very delusional
and violent,” Lovell said.

Other calls included a
fight that broke out behind

Hanky Panky’s nightclub, -

but when police arrived
the crowd had dispersed,
said Lovell.

There was a break-in at
a home on Little St. where
a VCR, some CDs and
hockey cards were stolen.

And a woman had her
purse snatched on Park
Ave, Lovell said,

Police also responded
to a case of spousal as-
sault which ended in a
man being arrested,

“It was a typical. New .

Eleven RCMP officers
were on duty that night re-
sponding to a few calls
and manning the Counter-
Attack roadblocks,
