8 Terrace Review — Wednesday, March 2, 1988 Terrace JEFF SHARPLES: takes charge of Terrace summer hockey school. ° The Northwest-Miller summer hockey school in Terrace no longer exists. It’s being replaced this sum- mer by the Jeff Sharples hockey school — a two-week school running August 15 to 27 at the Terrace Arena. Terrace Minor Hockey decid- ed on the change for several reasons, the main one being a cheaper price to attract more youngsters. The Northwest organizations charged $160 per player. The Sharples school will charge $100 per week. Sharples, who joined the N.HLL.’s Detroit Red Wings this season after a solid junior career, will run the school along with his father and several local youths with junior experience. A new aspect that’s now part of several schools across Canada will be part of Sharples’ school. It’s asummer hockey league that hockey school changes runs each night of the session, Cliff Sharples, Jeff’s dad and former coach of three B.C. championship Minor Hockey teams, said he hopes to round up four teams with 17 to 20 players on each squad. Non-schoo! par- ticipants sign up individually for a fee of $30 a week just for the league. Teams will be selected from those signing up separately and from older teens and instructors at the school. Registration for the school and league will start this month. “The night summer league is quite popular across the land,”’ Cliff told us. ‘‘Teams will be balanced so there’s no powerhouse. With four teams we can have two games a night.”’ Terrace youngsters will be contacted by mail insofar as signing up for the school. There will be a limit on a first-come, first served basis. Posters with registration forms attached will be sent to hockey organizations across the north so that outsiders can sign up. The question of Sharples bringing in some N.H.L. talent is up in the air. Because the new situation was just formalized, and because most N.H.L. players are already committed to summer schools elsewhere, it’s not likely Jeff can lure too many here. However, he will be making a try between now and the end of the season.
