Students’ group formed by Michelle Saline Caledonia Student A group of students at Caledonia school has banded together to form an organization called Students in Action. The group works with other agencies in Terrace and tries to make the students of Caledonia aware of the dangers of heavy drug use, and the danger of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The group recently worked with Constable Ewen Harvie of the Ter- race RCMP when he came to the school to give several presenta- tions on the crime of drinking and driving, and the consequences of that action. The members have voiced their thoughts on why they joined this club, A few of the reasons are as follows: Karen Sabourin said ‘‘I was concerned about the number of drinking and driving accidents that oc- cur around graduation, and_.I wanted to help in cutting them down. I also have some friends who are heavily into drugs and alcohol.'’ She also wants to see this Current Figures in TERRACE — On Satur- day, Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. Current Figures will per- form at the REM Lee Theatre. Background In 1982, Vancouver musicians Edwin Dolin- ski and Robert Caldwell invented Current Fig- ures, a two-man elec- tronic orchestra with vir- tually unlimited possibil- ities for sound. Caldwell and Dolinski belong to a ‘‘new breed”’ of musician-performer. Although classically trained, they're at ease with any style of music, from pop to avant- garde. They're at home on drums, keyboards, and at the keys, buttons, and switches that command state-of-the-art elec- tronic music machines. As a synthesizer en- semble, Current Figures is more than just a dazzl- ing variety of electronic- ally-produced sounds. Rather, the music itself is a unique syn- thesis of diverse musical styles which are produc- ed with a modern sen- sibility that gives Current Figures their own, orig- inal sound. But, it’s not the scrapes, buzzes, and twangs of traditional in- struments (and a host of other sounds) that form the raw material for Cur- rent Figures. The sounds can be called up into all kinds of ‘‘space’’ and “‘distances’’. This means that the program help them, and others like them. Michael Wong, the chairperson of this club, said ‘‘I helped organize a group of students who could help prevent fellow students frem drinking and driving.” Most of the other members said they join- ed largely because they didn’t want to see their family and friends in drinking and driving ac- cidents. The Students in Ac- tion club has at present nine members, Mrs. Gingles, one of the school counsellors, is the teacher who sponsors the concert group can bring listeners anything from a flute in a cathedral to a violin on the seashore; from a choir on a hilltop to, amazingly, ‘a band ‘'on the run’. The possibilities are harnessed by the enetr- getic and witty imagina- tion of Edwin Dolinski, the group’s composer. His works are performed anywhere that Current Figures can set up its ex- traordinary collection of keyboards, drums, mix- ers, speakers, and all- important computer. During the 1983-84 season, among other ap- pearances, Current Figures toured to 87 B.C, schools, playing to an estimated 30,000 en- thusiastic listeners. club. In the club, the chairperson is Michael Wong, the secretary is Michelle Saline and the historian is Marie Hep- burn. The club is not only concerned with drinking and driving; but also with alcohol and drug abuse by students; and seat belt safety. This group cares about their fellow students and wants to see all of them alive before’ and after graduation. give us a call.
