Gomez at top of poll in Rupert When ballots cast by Prince. Rup- ert voters in last week’s civic and municipal elections were counted, the name of a labor candidate head- ed the list. Ald. Darrow Gomez more than doubled his previous vote to win re-election to council. _ A member of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union, he was first elected to council in 1950, when he placed fourth among ten candidates contesting four council seats. This year he led a field of - eight candidates. His victory was tempered by the defeat of a sitting alderman, Jim Pruskey, running for re-election with labor support.. Two other labor-supported can- - didates, Ray Gardiner, secretary of Prince Rupert UFAWU local, and Percy Downing, a member of the Pulp and Sulphite Workers Union, were also defeated. - Results of the vote were: Council (first four elected); Ald. In Burnaby, William Turner, run- ning as a labor independent for council on a program of tax and _ other reforms, largely held the pro- _ gressive vote of the past two years, his 1205 votes comparing with the _ 1455 votes polled by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Turner, in 1951, and the 1387 votes he polled as a candidate in 1950, cs ; ‘Protest against eae, of the CCF majority on Burnaby Municipal Council to relieve home-owners of steadily increasng taxes by compell- ing the oil companies and other in- dustrial concerns to pay a more equitable share found its reflection at the polls. Two Neon-Partisan councillors won re-election at the top of the poll and the CCF’s Coun- cillor Patricia Wilks held her seat by a secant majority over a Non- Partisan newcomer. The controversial bylaw to auth- _ orize construction of a new muni- cipal hall, which was given a straight majority but failed to win _ the required three-fifths vote when it was submitted some weeks ago, was decisively rejected.
