The Gathie Falk retrospective currently on at the Vancouver Art Gallery until June 11 is purticalarly relevant to ws in the clay community. Gathie's seramee Works deme primarily in the late saxtees and carly seventies are still fresh and speak directly to comtemporary ceramists in that they are undeniably clay objects about objects. What is perhaps most inieresting to me as a pot person is that there is no involvement in the vessel dialectic and little interest in ‘echnrcal innovaion of virtuosity. Clay is the perfect medium to create these objects and yer in her hands it remains subservient t the subyect. While her artistic practice has encompassed many media, for me it is these three dimensional objects that provide the key to appreciating her work and reaffirms the possbalines of contemparary ceramic ar.
