BURNABY YEAR 2000 COMMUNITY ART PROJECT Keith Rice-Jones wins commission Keith is selected as the facilitating artist for the City of Burnaby’ s ¥ ear 2000 Community Art Project. His nontraditional approach to the mural concept includes a proposal for three columns of totem poles, reflecting the Ainu poles on Burnaby Mountun. Stacked rings of fired clay around a reinforced concrete core comprise the columns. Instead of working on flat rectangular tiles, participants work on the vertical section of the rings. Ideally the mngs will be extruded. Keith is currently explonng the possibility of elaboration with the First Nations’ Sumas Buck Works. This would give an added dimension to the connection with the Burnaby Mountain poles since the Ainu are Japanese First Nations’ people. The concept for the project is earth, water, wind and fire reflected in the process and structure, The theme reflects aspects of Burnaby's past, present and future as well as making reference to Burnaby’ s sister cites, Burnaby groups or individuals wishing to participate in this exciting community public art project, may contact either Sharon Reay at 604.205.3012 or Keith Rice-Jones at 604.527. S803, Celia Rice-Jones will be involved with the project and both plan to conclude it at Discovery Days on July 22 at Deer Lake Park. 2 Potters Guild of Bnush Columbia CANADIAN CLAY PRESENTS symposium leaders exhibit March 10 - April 2 Canadian Clay Presents is a group exhi- bition of callectiibles by some of the most significant Canadian ceramicists working today.
