MUSINGS

A young woman from Portland visited
my studiorecently and we quickly found
Ourselves debating whether or not she
should go te art school. She loves clay,
brat feels a little insecure and not cer-
tain she could leap successfully into a
fall-lime studio situation.

I'm self-taught and am aware of the
shortcomings as well as the positive
sicle of the way I've learned my commu-
nication with clay. [ve never been good
at the technical side of things and
might have learned all that stull at
sclynol.

Apprenticeships are difficult to find
ara if found sermetimes con't fit the
Student. This girl had a job—you know

rélinguish If she went to school,

] guess [he greatest danger |S to take
classes, graduate, and then discover
you're making work exactly like your
“teacher's”. This can be distreasing if
you've come to learn that your prof ts
more than a little quirky, is teaching for
the money, or hasn't made a clay piece
since his/her student days and has
absolutely no bleeding idea about sur-
Vital as an artist, potter, clay sculptor
or whatever in the “real” world.

It can take years to discover your own
work. It can lake years to shake off the
prefucices assumed al art school.

One of the great assets of going to learn
is thet you'll make connections and
friendships that will last a lifetime. And
there are some teachers who will in-
spire and support the natural direc.
