In response to. the leiters to the. editor
from Monica Wamer and T™ Holosko of

Dec. 6.

‘If their quotes had been factual I wouldn't
make this response. However, at no time
did I hear. anyone and certainly not me say
“why don’t you just sit down and shut up”’
as stated by Monica Warner.

This remark may have been made by
someone when a lady wanted:to know what
level of education one of the regional dis-

trict employees had to qualify for the posi-

tion he-held.

This raised spontaneous reaction from the
majority of the people present who, .no -

T.M. Holosko's. statemént that I called
someone an’ “empty aithead’”’ is ludicrous.
When I suggested that we wait until the
regional district is able to complete tests at
the Thornhill Refuse site before we make
any decisions, a young lady seated near the
mike ‘said. “We don’t.necd any scientific
testing to determine that the dump is pollut-

ing Thornhill Creek, All you have to do is.
walk around the area and you would know

this i is happening” or words to that effect. .

I readily admit to remarking to her that it
was unfortunate we were hiring consultants
to do this study when she could have as-
sessed the situation at no cost.

Of the 100 or more people whom attended

the meeting ‘approximately 10. persons: ex=
pressed. varying views regarding the. refuse
site proposal. These individuals tust re-

refuse site now, and a additional 11,000 or
so may be using it if the proposal proceeds

greetings are commonly heard at this time of year.
If you are working in the education system, you'll need.
every bit af spirit such greetings can give rise to.
If you are one of those who work behind the scenes —

keeping schools’ clean, : offices functioning, special needs,

satisfied, equipment and grounds: maintained - — the times
are particularly. uiceriain,..

The kindergarten to ‘grade: twelve system has entered a
new phase with the | government. ‘proposing the amalgama-
tion of many school boards. The’ rationale is that this will
save moricy by bringing about efficiencies.

As behind-the-scenes. workers; we'd welcome improve-_
ments, We have been trying to communicate about better
use of funds with administrators for quite some time.

At this point, we don’t have a great deal of faith in the-

outcome of the current drive to ‘become, more: cost effi-

cient. What we: hearing i is that as-usual, it will be the silent

docrs who will be cut back. Services like | ‘cleanliness, .

safety, special support and quality workmanship will bear

the brunt. And student services will suffer. «
Why. are we so Skeptical? We know that many efficien-

cies could have been brought about already, but haven’t. °

There have been, many labour management disputes, Few

were settled by ‘simple negotiations. .Most were either left
to gather dust or ended up iti arbitrations. . 7

Why? Because administrators who are paid to. manage
refused to resolve i issues that were well within their con-
trol. In the case of arbitrations, each is very expensive,
even ifsetiled:outof court...
In the case of injjiries on the job, school board managers
are. ‘spending. more time: and. ‘money . appealing worker’s

ing junkets: when nO robe exist to fill.

~ And 0 too are they looking’ for ways to move dollars
from one column to another pretending 10 save money by
coniracting-ont work instead of using | casual employees.

Itis extremely difficult to remain optimistic about the ef- -

ficiencies that could be brought about by amalgamation or
through thé current study ‘being conducted when the very
peoplé who have condoned the kinds of expenditures de-
scribed above are tasked with findi ing the solutions.

Experierice throughout the province is that when school
trustees look for solutions they ask the administrators, It is
a rare’ occasion - — the Stikine district being ‘one such ex-
ception — where when requested to find efficiencies, ad-
ministration cuts start at the top.

In Terrace whenever efficiencies are sought you can ex- -
pect that one or two more custodians or clerks or ©

maintenance people or special education. assistants will
have their hours reduced on their jobs eliminated,

Can we expect the same result from the current proposal
for amalgamation? We just don’t kiow. What we do.know
is that in the Icast five. years workloads for support staff
have increased: ‘and hours have beenreduced. --

Bah humbug. is another’ seasonal greeting attributed to

Christmas past when people at the Jow end of the ladder
bore the brunt...

believe that we will be returning to those times.
