TERRACE racer Chris Bie does a little smoke show in the “Rumble Bee” at the first drag racing weekend of the season. Bie was a fan favourite on the weekend doing huge crowd-thrilling wheelies at the start line. He place second in the Gamblers event losing out to Terrace’s Blake Bedford by just 0.09 seconds. Fans pack the stands at first drags of the season ..MORE THAN 400 fans packed the _ stands as another rubber-burning, high-speed drag racing season kicked it into high gear recently. ’ The May 31 test and tune gave racers and pit crews alike a chance to get their engines tuned in time for the following day’s racing. Some of the 75 drivers and their crews had better luck’ than others - working out the kinks before the race as to spare a few egos but there was the crew that “forgot” their vehicle’s hood pins and were rather suddenly reminded when during a high speed pass, at speeds reaching 90 mph their hood suddenly became airborne,” says Terrace Drag Racing Association spokesperson Lissa Ar- From B6 chibald. “The driver was later heard say- ing that the impact of his hood with his windshield sounded like a bomb exploding.” The following day marked the re- turn of high adrenaline drag racing in the northwest after the last two race days of the 2002 season were can- celled because of a paving project at the airport. The Gamblers series, where each entrant throws.$10 into a hat for the winner to take home, came down to two Terrace drivers. Blake Bedford took home the loot after beating Terrace'’s Chris Bie by only 0.09 seconds. Burns Lake’s John Safonoff took top spot on the podium in the King of the YXT in the Snowbike cate- gory which features motorcycles and bikes. Behind him were Kevin Enmark and Mark Barrisford, both from Kiti- mat, finishing second and third re- spectively. King honours for the cars and truck class went to Joe Orofo of Kiti- mat who tock out Ernie Ludditt in the final round, Next race days are scheduled for June 28 and 29, Saturday night features the street legal challenge for drivers who think their car has what it takes. “The TDRA challenges you to take it off the street and take it to the strip,” says Archibald. The idea is to get swimmers diversifying their strengths. The same philosophy applies to the types of strokes the swim- mers are learning. The Bluebacks have a heavy focus on the indi- vidual medley, which combines breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle and back stroke in one race, “It’s a trend that’s hap- pening in the north that we want the athletes to swim all strokes,” Carlyle says. “Having only one focus can certainly limit a swimmer’s career.” Several local swimmers posted fast times at the championships and Carlyle says it was an important stepping stone for those going on to provincials and nationals. Fishing on -Redsand and Treston Lakes Rss and Treston Lakes are located north of Terrace, in the Redsand Demonstration Forest. The lakes are part of the Kitsumkalum River, and offer good fishing for cutthroat trout and dolly varden. AnglersAtlas.cor- Bruce Bystrom from Misty River Tackle & Hunting says the lakes are good for fly fishing and regular gear fishing. If you are fly fishing, Bystrom suggests using emerging minnows and chirono- mids on the bottom, or a small midge pattern for the surface. Fish the emerging minnow pattern near the lake bottom to imitate a small fry emerging, says Bystrom, adding that fishing chironomids near the bottom is also effective. If you are using gear, Bystrom says trolling a wed- ding band with worm or maggot works well. The west end of the lakes are suitable for belly boats and pontoon boats. But it is. recommended that you use a larger boat on the eastern portion of the lakes, as the current from the Kitsumkalum River is quite strong. For more information about fishing these lakes, contact Bruce or Sam at Misty River Tackle & Hunting. ae rom Terrace, follow Highway [6 across the Kitsumkalum River, and turn right (north) at the Kalum Forest Service Road. Continue down this road about 26 km to the Redsand Demonstration Forest. Although there are three camp- ing locations within the demonstration forest, only one is located on Redsand Lake. This large site is in an open area, and has 20 vehicle units for camping. The site is accessi- ble with 2WD, and is connected to a wheelchair accessible interpretive trail. The Redsand Demonstration Forest is a pop- ular destination, as it offers a wide range of recreational activities. There are three camp- grounds, three trails, and a variety of ecolypes within the demonstration forest, and offers a self-guided interpretive loop.
