6 Terrace Review — Wednesday, July 29, 1987 oy Spring salmon ignore turbid water condition — TERRACE — High water that - recently threatened to wipe out the spring salmon sports fishing season has apparently subsided, and local fishermen say that the fishing right now is ‘‘great.’’ by Tod Strachan a Conservation ‘Officer Terry McGunigle said, ‘The length of the season was shortened some- what by the high water, but the Riverboat Daya Soclety Challenge '87 student, Michael Wong, bulit the Society's entry for the Cardboard Boat Race held last Sunday at Furlong Bay. The Society was grateful to Dairyland, who supplied the main: ingredient to the structure — 400 empty, sealed milk cartons. - Spatzizi continued from page 4 ‘ready has a surplus of relatively clean hydro-electric power, so ‘why does Gulf Canada want to _ isk spreading sulfur, mercury - and fluoride all over the sen- sitive alpine’ environment in Spatsizi? I believe the main rea- son is it will cost them less ‘money than extending the hydro power line from Aiyansh. Gulf Canada goes to great | “Tength in its Stage II Assessment ‘Report to downplay the deleter- ‘ious effects that the coal-burner - will have on the environment. But on close examination of the _ . Feport it becomes apparent that _. Gulf has based its optimistic en- ‘vironmental assessment on somewhat thin research. For ex- ‘ample, its climatological records for the area are for a period of less than two years. Long-time Terrace residents might recall "that the optimistic snowfall data ‘for Kitsumkalum Ski Hill was based on very short term clima- __tological data. When was the “last time Kitsumkalum Moun- * tain had: even two consecutive - years of good skiing? Further- more, Gulf used a.‘‘modelling”’ technique to anticipate the - dispersion of the coal burner’s smoke plume. This model was computer- generated and was based on flat terrain. The terrain ‘around Mt. Klappan . is moun- _tainous. UNESCO, an arm of the ‘United Nations, has for a long time recognized that parks in North America are under assault _ from various forms of pollution. ' For example, Glacier-Waterton ‘International Peace Park locat- ed astride the Montana-Alberta - . border: previously suffered from “fluoride: air pollution from a “smelter upwind. of the park in _ Montana. ; Concerned _ citizens eventually succeeded in halting this pollution at its source. UNESCO is now working with other parks (notably Banff and - Jasper National Parks) to set up environmentally-sound buffer. zones surrounding the parks. UNESCO feels that direct and blatant pollution of North American parks is unacceptable. I agree. At a time when more and more tourists will be travelling through the Terrace area on their way to Canada’s newest National Park at South Mores- by, I don’t believe it is good policy to risk degradating an already. established world-class park like Spatsizi. Therefore I encourage all Terrace residents to read through Gulf Canada’s | Stage II Assessment Report located in the Terrace Public Library, and decide for them- selves if we can afford the poten- tial for this kind of pollution i in’ Spatsizi. 7 ; Stephen Doyle a - Terrace, B.C, Alcan — * declares limited — dividend The directors of Alcan | Aluminium Limited recently } declared a quarterly dividend of | 15 cents per common share, in U.S. funds, payable Sept. 4, 1987 to shareholders of record at the close of business on Aug. 4, 1987, There are currently approx- imately 187.7 million: common | ‘shares in circulation. McGunigle reported that. some steelhead are now being caught, and a few coho have passed the test fishery at Tyee and should also be in local waters soon, | ‘He reminded sports fishermen that two local closures will soon be in effect. A closure for chinooks on the fi Kalum, below the signs located at the lower’ end of the lower canyon, will be ‘in effect from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30, and a closure for chinooks will also be in ef- fect. at the same time on the Skeena, from Brauns Island to the mouth of the Lakelse River. McGunigle also said a steel- head tagging program sponsored by the Wildlife Conservation Association is now in progress in the local area, and he asked for ‘the co-operation of. local fishermen. Association members will be tagging steelhead caught by ishermen prior to their release.
