\ THE OMINECA HERALD, NEW HAZELTON, B. C., WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1938 — = Great Gold Country: Just- North ot Here Worth the Young Man’s Attention| Little do many of us know what a vast country we live in in British Col- umbin. Perhaps less do we realize the possibilities of great wealth to be had trom this same country, Vancouver and Victoria think the entire province and all the wealth and all the taxpayers are confined in their infintismal boundaries. We, in what has been for years known as, Northern British Columbia, little realize that we are almost exactly in the centre of the province (north and south). South of us there has been taken a sreat deal of wealth from ‘the moun- trins and valleys. In our own midst there has been taken wealth from the mountains and valleys, and we are on- ly beginning to produce, or at least we . are starting regain to produce wealth _ from the mountains. Some of the villeys heve been producing returns vn effort and investment for a quarter of a century. But, just as we are beginning to hit _ the ball again, it is gradually being ire. pressed upon all of us, that, there isk... a. country north of us that has as great or grenter . possibilities as we ever dreamed of for this central portion, und the possibilities for faster devel- opment are even greater, The Provincial Government has been following close on the heels of the pros nector and the explorer (that is as faust as government can follow) and for a ntimber of years have had their own explorers in the field away north and erst of here. ; Great placer discoveries have been made in the country north and east, and some of the largest nuggets of gold have been taken out of that dist- _ ict, one, thee largest ever found in the }wovince, came from Alice Creek that weighed 56 ozs. and was bought by the provincial government for $1600, but other very large nuggets have iso’ caine from that same country. The country has been held back be- “The country spoken of above is well} known and show on the ,maps as-Cas- sair District. .It ig an immenge dist rict, high up in the world, and eon- taining many wide_and open glacial deposit valleys, and it is through these valleys the ereeks run. and earry gold. it is not an easy country to work, but it. pays wall ‘for efforts: made and a number of large companies are taking an interest in it now. The Cassiar country is not the Atlin country, by any means, but is an Em- pire lying to the east of Atlin. The latter country is very rich in gold and is on a producing basis in a hig way, nnd-production is increasing:from year to year. In’ fact Atlin is about the. only spot in ‘British Columbla where there has been no relief paid out, and Bert Glassy, the government agent for Atlin, and who is well known here, is authority for the statement that Atlin ageney was the fourth largest revenue pradueing agency in the province last year. Marketed Their | ‘Stuff in Rupert On the fitst train. with passengers to Prince Rupert on the pre-Christmas excursionists last Thursday were Mr, and Mus, Hougan of the Francois Lake district and their entire family of six, children. Along with them Mr. Hougan had practically a full car load of pro- duce from his own farm, and it. -was| - the intention to dispose ofthis to the merchants direct as far as possible, What eould not be disposed of now is to be placed instorage with M..P.
