The building ond contents were a total loss and the fama ily hid a close endl as all were in bed and asleep. Alr. MeKenzie was nwake first and found the place filled with smoke. Within an hour the big building was just.a heap of ashes in spite of all that the fire brigade could do. In fact the building went so fast that about all that could be done was to protect the other buildings in the nefehborhoad. The contents, with the exeeption of a few things of no partienlar value, all went with the building. The Smithers [fotel was not an ald! building, ‘The original hetel was de- stroyed by fire and the yew one erect: ed about ten years neo. Hospital Day Will be in June .. Kenney Nominated As the Liberal Candidate Convention in Smithers Sinithers was decidedly Liberal on Tuesday last, and in fact on’ Wednes: day also. The great nominating con- vention was beld in the railway town Tuesday afternoon and there were re- presentative Liberals there from all parts of the riding, and those not there were represented by proxy. They all were enthused over the prospects of un election in the not distant tuture—oh, for a chance to get those Tories out of officce and give the Liberals an appor- tunity to put the country on its feet, and to bring back boom times aguin. The convention was held in the town hall aud there were 85 or 40 delegates present able and ready tu vote for a candidate, and they scemed to know the candidate they were going ta vote ‘for. At a mecting the weck before of the | (Smithers local) associution there secm- ied to be quite # demand for a Simith- ers candidate. One or two seemed a little anxious tu get into the game aud: had themselves nominuted, tut the main forees lHned up behind Sam Mey- er and decided to nominate him when the big convention was culled, but of course Samuel had ne intention what ever of allowing his name ta gu to the convention. He has altogether much fun, und holds too strong a hand, ta break into the game of member, or even prospective candidate. When the convention was cnlled at two o'clock on Tuesday afternoon Samuel's name ja¥as .not. put before the, delegates. fact the only name put in nomination wis that of E. T. Kenney of Terrace, aud he was chosen unanimously, and amid cheers. So much for capable or- ganization, Dr, H, C, Wrineh who his so well represented the istrict at Victoria for the past eight or nine years, and who has vetired from the political urena, Was very pitch in attendance at the convention, and he lent a lot ofas- sistince where it was most required, After the cindidnate had been well and duly selected the gathering pro- ceded to cleet officers for the Skeena iyviding Central Libern)] Association, and the Tollowing were the results :— Hlon, W. L. MecINensie King. and Hon Ty, Pattulla, honorary presidents, of Lansen, ALP. Da, HO. Wrineh "ex-LALA. amd B, T. Kenner, honorary vice-presidents, Sam. Meyer, Stuithers, president. 8. HH. Senkpiclh New Mazelton, vive- president, Jiumes Tumhull, And trensier, In the evening there was a banquet in the Anglican hall for the faithful, and some lnaxlred peoyle gathered at the festive board, Enthusiasm reign- ed supreme, Everyone of that hurd- red stalwarts knew what was coming nfter the eats, and they took aboard a tirgo of said eats, and then sat uae Hazelton, secretary those members of the gathering who were overflowing with their subject attacked, fore and aft and on both wings the horrible mess of the Conset vative party; the horrible mes | that ‘party had made of British’ Columbia: affairs, and the utter lack of any pos- sible polley to put before the people at this time. ‘The speakers fairly revel- led in the gore and the audience ap- plauded. Tt was a good dinner and a lot of speeches were mode and the spenkers said the speeches were just ts good as the dinner. The boys sat about and enjoyed it all. ’ In due course ample justice had been done to the Torles and as there was a lot of the night still left, a dance was In}. put on for the entertainment of the de- legates. This was something all could join in, even Conservatives, althouch it ix not reeorded in the minute book whether any Conservatives were pre sent, At that it was a good dance and there may have been a Tory or two sticking around. Tiw Hazelton and the New Hazelton delegates got away home on Wednes- day. but. the Terrree oud western dele- gates had to wait nutil Thursday for the train, but they did not mind when they hud their own eandidate with them. Caudidate Ed, Kenney did not waste mush time after the convention. He has a lot of work to do between now and election day, and it is under- stand that he got busy right off the bat iwith the big men of the orge nization. Fdward is comparatively new in the political game. although he has al- ways beon netive in local and district orenhizations, and during the last eam- prign he even got out amd made some speccBbes, Hut his tronbles are only starting. Hut he is young and he is prepared to satfer much for the good of the. community. Liberals Away. To Convention In Blaze Glory In spite of the April showers two cr three carloads of Liberal delegate~ left Hazelton and New Hazelton Tuc~ day ‘for Smithers: to attend the Noin- inating convention of the Grand O11 Party. There were §. H. Senkpiel and J, H. Willan from New Hazelton, und Dr. Wrinch, Pete Corrigan, Jas. Tari- bul, Henry Bretzin, Wm. Grant nud ninybe others from Hazelton and dis. trict—all bent on saving the country for posterity and the particularly the Liberal party There was no seureity of cuudidutes to choose from, They had got themselves tulked so thorguzh ly into the belief that anyone coukt beat the Conservative candidate at the coming election that they figured it Was a good time to get in and get their feet..wet,, OF course «ail the Droste: tive candidates had not that iden. one at leust desired to save the conn- try from the wicked Tories, and espec- ially from that terrible Premier S. I. Tohnie who had done so much to put the patronage business out of business. The Liberals have also got themselves worked up to the point where they he. lieve that Mr, Pattullo and his party will nndoubtedly be returned to power after the next vote is counted, and ef- ter helng loyal so long to the Liberal party the Ioval Liherads naturally de- site to be on the right side of the fence But, they were of the same opinion some five yvenurs ago. One never eu tell about tin election. There is a live wire Tidinn at Martee town, j and he made goad out of the. Its so much a pull and if you want to get ont you pny. and if. ' you don’t pay you stay there, .
